ELLIOTT DON HELFMAN (TP-MELL-VIB)

Somerville, New Jersey. 20/10/1926. – Weston, Connecticut. 5/7/1984.

Ha iniziato ad interessarsi di musica all’età di sei anni, a otto anni ha studiato la fisarmonica, il corno ed il mellophone, suonando questi strumenti nelle orchestre scolastiche. Ha suonato la tromba in orchestrine da ballo ed ha completato i suoi studi nel 1944 applicandosi sull’armonia alla Julliard School. Nel 1945 ha suonato la tromba in una banda militare, congedatosi alla fine del 1946. Poi ha iniziato a suonare il vibrafono ed ha studiato arrangiamento all’Università di Miami nel 1947. Nel 1948 ha debuttato nel trio di Jan Raye, come cantante ha lavorato con gli “Hi-Lo, Jack & The Dance”. Dal luglio del 1950 al febbraio del 1951 ha fatto parte del gruppo di George Shearing. Ha fatto anche parte delle orchestre di Teddy Wilson, di Terry Gibbs, di Louie Bellson e per breve tempo nel 1952 di quella di Benny Goodman. Agli inizi del 1953 è stato con Buddy Rich e poi con Mundell Lowe. Dal 1960 ha lavorato a New York come freelance ed alla guida di propri gruppi, nel 1959 ha cantato in duo con Sascha Burland. Ha scritto la musica e diretto un quartetto per un lavoro presentato a Broadway nel 1960 “Thurber Carnival”. In seguito si è applicato sempre più in lavori per spettacoli radiotelevisivi e documentari per le forze armate, sia come compositore che come produttore. In questo campo ha ottenuto dei successi notevoli che lo hanno impegnano molto, allontanandolo sempre più dalle esibizioni jazzistiche. E’ ritornato al jazz nel 1975 per una esibizione alla Carnegie Hall in omaggio a Quincy Jones, poi ha collaborato con Gerry Mulligan, ha fatto parte del “New York Jazz Ensemble” ed ha inciso con Bob Corwin, Billy Taylor, Leonard Feather, Dick Hyman, Ruby Braff, Morey Feld e lo stesso Quincy Jones. Sono pochi gli strumenti nei quali non si è cimentato, dalla tromba al corno francese, al vibrafono, conseguendo sempre ottimi risultati.

ELLIOTT ERNEST “STICKY” (CL-ST)

Boonville, Mississippi.23/2/1893. – New York. Febbraio 1977.

Il suo debutto è avvenuto a Detroit nel 1919 con la Kentucky Jazz Band di Hank Duncan. Si trasferisce a New York e qui suona con i Jazz Hounds di Johnny Dunn, gruppo molto in vista con il quale ha partecipato a diverse tournée con compagnie di vaudeville, avrà anche modo di accompagnare delle famose cantanti di blues tra le quali Mamie Smith e registrare molti dischi con la Columbia. Nel 1923 ha lavorato con Perry Bradford, con i Gulf Coast Seven, nel 1924 ha incontrato Clarence Williams con il quale ha collaborato anche in altre occasioni. E’ diventato il musicista preferito dalle bluesingers, come Bessie Smith, Sarah Martin, ha suonato anche con Thosas Morris, con King Oliver nel 1928 e con James P. Johnson. Nel 1940 lo ritroviamo con Sammy Stewart e nel 1947 con Willie The Lion Smith. Clarinettista molto capace, purtroppo la sua notevole tecnica che sconfina spesso in puro virtuosismo andrà a scapito del calore.

Montreal, Canada. 12/4/1920.

Cantante dalla voce di soprano, di origini canadesi. Voce dallo stile vigoroso e dalla tecnica scolastica. Ha interpretato la classica cantante da cabaret. E’ stata attiva nell’ambiente jazzistico ed in quello hollywoodiano. E’ stata la voce fantasma di Vera Ellen e Rita Hayworth, nei doppiaggi cinematografici. Cantante dalla muscolosa drammaticità, cercava in ogni interpretazione di identificare un ricordo ed un evento personale.

Cantante inglese molto originale. Ha iniziato a lavorare nei locali e nei club con Keith Nichols, con Alan Leat, con la “Midnite Follies Orchestra” e con Tiny Winters. Uomo dalla conoscenza enciclopedica della canzone e della discografia, dal 1960 al 1970 ha occupato un posto di rilievo alla EMI come archivista e molti musicisti hanno tratto profitto delle sue conoscenze ed esperienze. Agli inizi degli anni ’90 si è stabilito ad Amsterdam, dove ha continuato a cantare ed a produrre dischi per la Timeless e per una sua etichetta.

A tre anni con la famiglia si è trasferito a Berkeley in California. E’ cresciuto in un ambiente dove si ascolta qualsiasi tipo di musica. Ha iniziato a studiare il clarinetto ed il sassofono al Cazadero Music and Arts Camp e sin dall’inizio dimostra un talento particolare. Si laurea nel 1985 ed entra al Berklee College of Music dove ha studiato composizione e teoria laureandosi in produzione musicale ed ingegneria. Nel 1992 è rientrato nella Bay Area, è diventato un simbolo del “new jazz”, ha collaborato con Charlie Hunter e Jay Lane. Nel 1997 è nominato miglior nuovo talento e nel 1999 ha ricevuto un l’Haward californiano.

ELLIS DON DONALD JOHNSON (TP)

Los Angeles, California. 25/7/1934. – Los Angeles, California. 17/2/1978.

Figlio di un organista dilettante, ha iniziato a guidare dei propri gruppi già alla high school, con questi trovava lavoro nelle feste da ballo. Ha studiato la tromba e si è diplomato in composizione presso il Conservatorio New England di Boston. Ha frequentato anche la Lennox School of Jazz. Ha debuttato professionalmente nell’orchestra di Ray McKinley. Dal 1957 al 1958 ha suonato in bande militari di stanza in Germania durante il servizio militare. Rientrato in patria e congedato ha suonato con l’orchestra di Woody Herman, poi è al fianco di Claude Thornill, di Lionel Hampton, di Charlie Carnet, con Maynard Ferguson nel 1959, con Charles Mingus. Lo stesso anno si è trasferito a New York dove ha messo su un trio. Dal 1961 al 1962 ha collaborato con George Russell, nel 1963 ha fondato e ha diretto la “The Improvisational Workshop”, partecipando con essa a diverse trasmissioni televisive sul jazz. E’ diventato la tromba solista nella “New York Philarmonic Orchestra”, diretta da Leonard Bernstein nell’esecuzione di “Improvisation” di Larry Austin. Nel 1964 ha lavorato con Gunther Shuller, poi si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove ha ripreso a studiare composizione e armonia all’università della California (UCLA) e si è esibito con il suo “Hindustani Jazz Sextet”, con il quale ha manifestato il suo interesse per le culture musicali asiatiche. Ha iniziato ad esibirsi con una big band di 23 elementi, poi ha interrotto questa esperienza e trasferirsi a Buffalo per insegnare alla locale università grazie ad una borsa di studio offertagli dalla Fondazione Rockfeller. Nel 1965 è tornato a Los Angeles per insegnare alla UCLA. Ha collaborato spesso con Hari Har Rao suonatore indiano di sitar ed è diventato l’assistente di Likas Foss. Organizza una orchestra di venti elementi, con intere sezioni di percussioni, che ha riscosso grande successo nel 1966 al Festival di Monterey, in tale gruppo adoperava con molta maestria una base creata con filtri elettronici e cori alle evoluzioni della sua tromba dalla voce limpidissima. Nel 1973 è stato premiato con il Grammy Haward per il suo “Theme for the french Connection”. In seguito si è allontanato dal Jazz per dedicarsi alle colonne sonore, con le quali ha avuto molto successo ed ha lavorato per grandi registi. Purtroppo il suo grande talento è stato stroncato da una crisi cardiaca a 44 anni. Solista virtuoso di una tromba confezionata solo per lui, tromba con quarti di toni che gli permetteva delle sfumature sottili.
