BLAKEY ART ABDULLAH BUHAINA (DR)
Pittsburgh, Pensylvania. 11/10/1919. – New York, 16/10/1990.
Batterista pirotecnico e grande innovatore. Egli è stato l’emblema dell’avanguardia della batteria nel jazz per tre generazioni di musicisti. Grande musicista ma anche grande scopritore di talenti. Ha studiato il pianoforte con il quale ha iniziato la sua carriera. Non si conosce il vero motivo per il quale ha lasciato il pianoforte per la batteria, uno dei più attendibili è che, nell’orchestra dove lavorava, venne a mancare il batterista per malattia e lui fu invitato a prenderne il posto. Nel 1939 ha suonato nell’orchestra di Fletcher Henderson, poi nel 1940 con Mary Lou Williams, nel 1944 con quella di Billy Eckstine. Alla fine del 1947 ha partecipato a delle registrazioni insieme a Thelonious Monk ed è entrato nella Blue Note. Si è convertito all’islamismo ed ha assunto il nome di Abdullah Ibn Buhaina. Si è recato in India poi in Africa dove ha sostato per due anni nella regione di Accra e poi in Nigeria, da quel momento la cultura di quel continente sarà sempre presente nella sua musica. Nel 1949 è tornato in America dove ha lavorato con Lucky Millinder, poi con Earl Hines, Zoot Sims, Buddy De Franco e si è incontrato di nuovo in sala di registrazione con Monk, la cui musica era uno stimolo perfetto per le sue idee. Ha collaborato con Miles Davis nel 1952. Nel 1954 ha fondato i “Jazz Messengers” insieme a Horace Silver, idea che è stata poi ripresa nel 1956, data in cui è nato ufficialmente il gruppo degli “Art Blakey Jazz Messegners”. In questo gruppo si sono avvicendati molti grandi musicisti già affermati e molti per i quali questa prima esperienza è stata molto importante nel proseguo della loro carriera, tanto che la maggior parte di loro sono diventati dei famosi leaders. Gruppo che è stato un modello per diverse generazioni di giovani. Nel 1987 ha ricevuto dal Berklee College Of Music di Boston l’Honorary Degree di dottore in musica. Con Kenny Clarke, Max Roach ha fatto della batteria uno strumento di primo piano. Il batterista moderno più irruente, la potente carica che veniva dal suo drumming costringeva i suoi solisti a dare il massimo. Egli ha sempre preteso che gli altri musicisti adattassero il loro modo di suonare a quello della sua batteria. Personaggio genuino, dalla grande carica umana e di simpatia. E’ stato uno dei primi ad introdurre nel jazz strumenti, tecniche e suonatori originari dell’Africa.

Ha compiuto gli studi presso il New Orleans Center for the Creative Art e qui ha conosciuto Donald Harrison con il quale si ritrova nell’80 in un loro gruppo. Ha suonato nella New Orleans Civic Orchestra, si è trasferito a New York e si è iscritto ad un corso di tromba classica alla Ritgers University e con l’aiuto di Paul Jeffrey è entrato nell’orchestra di Lionel Hampton. E’ stato assunto al posto di Wynton Marsalis nei Messengers nel 1982, nel cui gruppo ha svolto anche il compito di direttore musicale. Ha formato in seguito un quintetto con Donald Harrison, ha suonato con Larry Willis. Tecnicamente ineccepibile, dal timbro caldo e dal fraseggio deciso ma tranquillo, risente in positivo degli studi classici. Si è segnalato come una delle migliori trombe dell’ultima generazione.

Cantante che più di ogni altro è riuscito ad interpretare meglio l’incontro tra il blues ed il gospel. E’ stato il tipico cantante soul. Il suo senso del rituale, l’emotività e il lirismo, la passione e la sensualità sono frutti del sud nero dal quale egli proviene. Ha fatto anche tesoro di alcuni celebri modelli, come B. B. King, Ira Tucker ed il reverendo C. L. Franklin padre di Aretha, ma anche di celebri crooners bianchi come Perry Como e Tony Bennett. Protagonista incontrastato nel circuito dei bar, dei teatrini e delle taverne dei ghetti nordamericani, con il suo modo di porgersi misurato sia nella voce che nella teatralità è stato in grado di instaurare un rapporto ritualistico con il suo pubblico, specie quello femminile. Artisticamente il gemello di Ray Charles, anche se meno famoso.

La sua principale attività non era quella di musicista ma quella di gelataio. Ha fatto parte dei Mound City Blue Blowers nel 1924 e vi resta sino al 1930. Svolge attività di freelance, suona con Marty Marsala nel 1942 con Art Hodes. Ha diretto anche dei suoi gruppi, il primo nel 1940 con il quale si è esibito al Billingsley Club e poi nel 1944 al Club 51 di New York. Si ritira a vivere in California, dove soprattutto registra. Ha inciso con i Rhythm Makers, con George Wettling, Billy Banks, Pee Wee Russell, Benny Morton.

Figlio di un negro libero e di una famiglia di buon livello sociale, ha studiato alla Howard University. Ha iniziato scrivendo delle camzoni per spettacoli di minstrells ed in seguito è entrato a farne parte. Con una delle più famose di queste compagnie i Callender Minstrels ha fatto anche una tournée in Europa. E’stato un bravo attore ed un ottimo compositore.

E’ nato in una famiglia di musicisti ed ha avuto come maestro Charlie Persip. Ha suonato anche con Walt Dickerson nel 1965, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, LeRoy Jenkins, Jimmy Lyons, ha registrato con Andrew Hill, Bill Barron, Ronald Alexander, John Hicks, Earl Cross. Ha avuto anche un suo gruppo il”Melodic Artet”.

Ha incontrato Gunter Hampel durante il periodo universitario ed inizia ad interessarsi al jazz, in particolare al jazz rock. Ha collaborato con Joachim e Rolf Khun, conn Randy Brecker, Jan Akkerman, in duo con Philip Catherine, nel 1975 con Charlie Mariano, Johnn Lee e Gerry Brown. Fonda il suo gruppo Electric Circus nel 1976 con Jasper van’t Hoff ed Edward Vesala e che diventa un quartetto con l’arrivo di Dave King. Con il suo gruppo gira tutta l’Europa. Ha suonato anche in duo con il chitarrista Rudolf Dasek. Ha inoltre suonato con Adelhard Roidinger, Leszek Zadlo, Chris Beier, Lajos Dudas e molti altri. Nel 2002 ha partecipato anche al Festival Chitarristico Internazionale “Guitarras del Mundo”in Argentina. Negli ultimi anni spesso si è esibito da solo. Musicista tedesco la cui produzione prevede l’uso di molti strumenti moderni e di molta elettronica. Il tutto viene impiegato con un attento studio degli effetti sonori. L’atmosfera è quella della massima libertà, sempre però fine a se stessa, ricca e ben organizzata. Leader del gruppo “Electric Circus”.

E’ entrato nell’orchestra di Fate Marable, con la quale ha lavorato sui battelli fluviali. Terminati gli studi nel 1937 si sposta a St.Louis ed ha iniziato a suonare nella Jeter-Pillar. Nel 1939 è stato assunto da Duke Ellington nella sua già famosa orchestra. Con il Duca ha trascorso il resto della sua vita professionale, difatti lo ha lasciato solo per ricoverarsi in sanatorio dove poi è morto. Blanton è considerato uno dei migliori bassisti della storia del Jazz. La sua tecnica strumentale, le sue idee moderne ed innovative nell’usare lo strumento, hanno influenzato intere generazioni di bassisti.
BLAST UNIT ORCHESTRA.
Organico nato nel 2001 in seno al “Collettivo jazzisti autogestiti milanesi”. Orchestra che ha fatto sue l’esperienze dell’avanguardia storica statunitense. Ha partecipato con successo al “Ah-Um Jazz Festival” di Milano e nel 2005 ha registrato presso gli studi della RAI il primo disco a suo nome. Essa non ha un leader, ma il gruppo di giovani improvvisatori che segue le procedure orchestrale ispirate da Charles Mingus e da Gil Evans, con assoli sempre funzionali al collettivo. Una realtà espressiva importante in significativa ascesa.

BLAZE RALPH BLASI. (G)
New Brunswick, New Jersey. 11/4/1922.
Chitarrista che nella sua carriera ha avuto due momenti molto creativi e produttivi. Il primo quando ha collaborato con Stan Kenton e la sua grande orchestra, nella quale i suoi interventi solistici hanno caratterizzato un particolare momento della stessa. Con Stan Kenton ha anche registrato e fatto una tournée Europea. Il secondo è stato durante il soggiorno, negli anni ‘70 a Salt Lake City, quando con il suo gruppo ha richiamato folle di appassionati al popolare club il Lighthouse di Hermosa Beach. Ha anche condotto dei corsi per l’insegnamento della chitarra. Ha debuttato nel 1948 con l’orchestra di Gene Krupa, con il quale è rimasto per tre anni. Ha diretto per molto tempo un suo gruppo nel ”Cinegrill” un club di sua proprietà. E’ stato anche un ottimo scultore.
BLECKMANN THEO (P-VC)

Da bambino ha fatto parte dei cori dei bambini, con i quali ha registrato il suo primo disco a 11 anni, ha continuato la sua formazione musicale prendendo lezioni di chitarra e di pianoforte. Ed ha esordito professionalmente a 21 anni nella “BuJazzo”un’orchestra formata da giovani talenti selezionati dal suo direttore Peter Herbolzheimer. Nel 1989 si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti a New York. Ha studiato con borse di studio al Berkelee College of Music e alla Manhattan School of Music. Ha esordito con il pianista Kirk Nurock, con il quale ha avuto una lunga collaborazione. Ha fatto parte del gruppo di Mark Dresser nel 1993. Si è esibisce nei migliori club della città ed ha collaborato nella sua carriera con Laurie Anderson, Anthony Braxton, Mark Dresser, Michael Douglas, Anthony Jackson, Sheila Jordan, che è stata quella che lo ha convinto ad andare a New York e gli ha procurato le borse di studio, Meredith Monk, Ikue Mori, Elliott Sharp, Ben Monder, Randall Wong, David Lang, Michael Gordon e Julia Wolf ed altri. Molti musicisti che hanno collaborato con lui hanno anche composto insieme a lui. Musicista che fa parte della attuale scena del jazz di New York, pianista e cantante di un gusto ed una qualità ragguardevole. Cantante che ricorda molto il vocalismo di Johnny Mercer. Anche interprete, compositore ed anche attore di teatro.

Scrittore, critico musicale, produttore di dischi e annunciatore radiofonico. Ha iniziato ad interessarsi di jazz mentre frequenta il Dartmouth College. Nel 1920 ha iniziato gli studi di architettura all’Università della California ed inizia anche a lavorare nel campo della musica. Agli inizi degli anni ’40 ha iniziato a scrivere critiche di jazz per il San Francisco Chronicle. Ha organizzato nel 1943 dei concerti con vecchi musicisti di New Orleans e quindi si è trasferito a New York dove ha scritto degli articoli per il New York Herald Tribune. Critico musicale che si é dedicato in modo particolare al jazz arcaico. Ha pubblicato ”Shining Trumpets” nel 1946, “This is jazz” e ”They all played ragtime” nel 1950. E’ noto anche per aver riscoperto e organizzare sedute di incisione per alcuni pionieri del jazz.

Ha debuttato con Freddie Hubbard, ha suonato poi con Larry Ridley. Nel 1960 si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove ha messo su un suo gruppo con il quale ottiene un buon successo. Ha anche suonato con Ray Crawford, con il pianista Don Randi, con Fred Katz, con Paul Horm e con Al Jerreau. Ha registrato con Lalo Schifrin.
BLEVINS LEO (G)
Chicago, Illinois. 20/11/1925.
Ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra da bambino. Ha maturato molta esperienza suonando nelle strade di Chicago e accompagnando Wilbur Ware, Ike Day ed altri giovani cantanti. All’inizio degli anni ’40 ha fatto una tournée con T-Bone Walker. Nel 1947 ha registrato con Dexter Gordon, con la Russell Jacquet’s Band, ha accompagnato Numa Lee Davis a Los Angeles, ha registrato a Chicago con Gene Ammons e con il gruppo di Clifford Brown-Max Roach nel 1955. A New York ha suonato con Red Prisock nel 1956. Nel 1966 si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove è entrato nel gruppo di Louis Jordan. E’ rimasto a lavorare nell’area di Los Angeles da freelance sia in gruppi jazz che in gruppi blues. Si è esibito anche insieme al fratello l’organista Bobby Blevins.
