Trombonista tedesco la cui musica vuole ripercorrere le vie dell’improvvisazione con una serie di esibizioni solitarie e collettive messe insieme in maniera molto suggestiva. Ottimo strumentista che viene indicato come uno dei massimi esponenti degli anni ’90 del trombone. Trombonista dal suono morbido e dalla tecnica multifonica portata al massimo della perfezione.

BAUER JOHANNES (TB)

Fratello di Konrad. Ha suonato in molte band tradizionali tedesche. Ha studiato a Berlino trombone classico e ha suonato musica barocca, ma anche fatto parte di gruppi di musica soul e rock. Nel 1972 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Manfred Schultz, ha suonato con Peter Brotzmann, con Fred van Hove, dell’orchestra di Tonyn Oxley. Ha suonato in duo con il fratello, con Cecil Taylor, con la Derek Bailey’s Company, la Globe Unity Orchestra. Nel 1980 ha partecipato a delle sperimentazioni sulla improvvisazione collettiva.

BAUER STEPHAN (VIB)

Recklinghausen, Germania, 14/12/1956.

Ha iniziato ha studiare il pianoforte ed a 14 anni è passato al trombone, quindi la chitarra, il sassofono ed il bassoom. Dal 1975 al 1978 ha studiato il trombone al Musikhochschule di Dortmund, nel 1976 dopo aver ascoltato il gruppo di David Friedman e Dave Samuels ha deciso che il suo strumento è il vibrafono, quindi si è recato a Boston nel 1978 per studiare alla Berklee College of Music. Tornato in Germania ha suonato con un suo gruppo e ha registrato. Nel 1981 ha fatto parte della Vienna Art Orchestra, ha suonato con Uli Beckerhoff, con Doug Hammond nel 1984, con il batterista Christof Hebener e ha fatto molte tournée. Ha messo su un quartetto insieme al sassofonista Matthias Nadolny, il bassista Tim Wells ed il batterista Thomas Alkier. Nel 1989 ha studiato in Canada alla Banff School of Fine Art e dal 1991 ha alternato il soggiorno e la sua attività musicale tra il Canada e la Germania. Ricordiamo le sue collaborazioni più importanti: Tim Haggans, Adam Nusbaum, il Jazzfest Berlin. Ha anche insegnato in Germania al Conservatorio Osnabruck ed al Folgwang Musikhochschule di Monaco ed in Canada all’University of Manitoba.

Musicista balzata alla notorietà negli anni ’60, è riuscita a disimpegnarsi egregiamente sia nel soul che nel jazz. Ha guidato con successo un suo gruppo l’ ”Agneta Baumanns Orkester”. Nel 1986 ha perso tragicamente il marito, questa perdita l’ha portata a ritirarsi dall’attività. Ha ripreso l’attività nel 1995 lavorando stabilmente a Stoccolma e nel 1996 è tornata anche in sala di registrazione. Cantante dalla voce profonda, affascinante, senz’altro la migliore cantante scandinava, il suo modello è senz’altro Helen Merrill.

Insegna pianoforte ed improvvisazione alla Scuola di Musica di Lucerna. Buon compositore anche per il teatro, cinema e balletti. Ha diretto diversi gruppi.

Ha imparato a suonare la batteria da autodidatta e a diciotto anni ha iniziato a suonare pubblicamente. Nel corso degli anni ha collaborato con molti musicisti tedeschi e anche diversi stranieri. Tra i più importanti Barney Willen, con il Freiburg Modern Jazz Group, con Joki Freund, con Albert Mangelsdorff, con George Gruntz, con Volker Kriegel. Nel 1968 al 1972 è stato con il “Dave Pike Set”.

BAUZA MARIO (TP)

Avana, Cuba. 28/4/1911. – New York, 11/7/1993.

E’ emigrato negli Stati Uniti nel 1931 e ha suonato con Cass Carr, poi con Noble Sissle nel 1932, Sam Wooding, con la grande orchestra di Chick Webb dal 1933 al 1938, Don Redman, con Cab Calloway nel 1939. Ha organizzato l’orchestra di Machito portandola al successo. I suoi arrangiamenti sono stati una perfetta fusione fra jazz e musica cubana, anche frutto delle sue precedenti esperienze. E’ stato l’ispiratore di Gillespie con il quale aveva suonato durante la loro permanenza nell’orchestra di Cab Calloway. Ha suonato la tromba, ma anche il sassofono ed il clarino, nonché compositore ed arrangiatore, è stato importante nel jazz più di quanto si pensi.

Colombo, Ceylon, Sri Lanka. 14/11/1939.

Bambina prodigio ha studiato il pianoforte sotto la guida del padre pianista professionista e già a quindici anni ha un suo Show personale alla radio di Ceylon. In seguito ha lavorato con Graeme Bell e con Toshiko Akiyoshi. Nel 1956 si è trasferita in Inghilterra e a Londra lavora come attrice, è stata la prima attrice indiana a far parte della compagnia teatrale dell’Old Vic. E’ apparsa alla TV accanto a Sammy Davis Jr. e per un certo periodo ha presentato dischi di jazz ai microfoni della BBC. Come cantante ha lavorato con Joe Harriott, Vic Ash, Kenny Ball e Humphrey Lyttelton. Nel 1962 la ha ascoltata Dave Lambert e qualche tempo dopo l’ha chiamata a sostituire Annie Ross nel gruppo vocale Lambert-Hendricks-Ross e vi è rimasta sino al suo scioglimento nel 1964. In seguito ha lasciato il canto per ritornare al teatro come attrice di prosa. E’ stata una buona interprete di jazz, dove ha dimostrato l’autorità di una interprete esperta.

Ha suonato con Paul Whiteman. Durante la prima guerra mondiale ha fatto parte dell’orchestra della marina militare la Mare Island Navy Yard. Tra gli anni ‘20 e’30 ha diretto anche una sua orchestra.

Nel 1936 in Germania egli si è associato al violinista Paul Godwin, collaborazione interrotta solo dalla seconda guerra mondiale. Ha ripreso l’attività in Belgio ed in Olanda con Dick Willebrandts, con il quale anche ha registrato. Ha suonato con il gruppo tedesco dei Ramblers nel 1945 e nel 1948 ha fondato un’orchestra insieme a Boyd Bachman, con la quale ha suonato in Svizzera, in Svezia ed in Belgio, dove ha formato una nuova orchestra con la quale si è esibito alla Radio. Ha registrato molti dischi, ha collaborato con David Bee nel 1956 ed in seguito continua a lavorare per la radio.

Dopo aver suonato in vari piccoli gruppi, ha messo su la sua “His Jazzola Novelty”nel 1924. Ha suonato anche con Tony Parenti e con un suo gruppo a St. Louis ed a Chicago. Nel 1928 si è stabilito a New York, dove ha lavorato in vari club di alberghi. Ha sospeso l’attività per i postumi di un incidente stradale ed è ritornato nella sua città dove ha svolto altre attività e sporadicamente è riapparso nell’ambiente musicale. Ha fatto parte dei molti suonatori di cornetta di New Orleans poco conosciuti.

Chicago, Illinois. 1880. – Chicago, 19/3/1928.

Cantante ma anche attrice di vaudeville e compositrice, popolarissima ad inizio del secolo. Di famiglia ebrea, ha iniziato la carriera a Chicago nel 1898. Dei suoi cinque mariti il più importante è stato Jack Northworth sposato nel 1908, con il quale ha scritto “Shine On, Harvest Moon”, che è diventata una delle canzoni più popolari del XX secolo. Ha lavorato molto in teatro a Broadway e nel 1908 ha fatto parte della seconda serie delle Zigfield Follies, dove ha cantato anche il suo famoso tema. E’ stata anche attrice drammatica abbastanza brava. Cantante non in possesso di una grande voce, ma ha sempre colpito la sua eleganza, la dizione perfetta ed il suo talento naturale.

Ha suonato e registrato con Teddy Edwards, Dexter Gordon, Curtis Amy, Roy Ayers. Personaggio artisticamente poliedrico, oltre all’attività di musicista egli è un bravo pittore ed ha collaborato attivamente ai Recital di Poesia e Jazz.

BAZZLE GERMAINE (VC)

New Orleans, 28/3/1932.

Cantante molto popolare nella sua Louisiana, è stato una vera legenda del Jazz di New Orleans. Voce dalla ìntonazione perfetta e dalla grande vivacità e musicalità. Molto conosciuta e stimata anche come insegnante. Si è laureata alla Xavier Univesrity, ha cantato regolarmente la domenica con il Saint Louis Catholic Choir, ha fatto parte del corpo docente al Louis Armostrong Jazz Camp. I suoi punti di riferimento sono le grandi cantanti moderne, a cui si è rifatta con estrema diligenza. Ha denunciato purtroppo qualche spigolosità espressiva di troppo anche per colpa del suo temperamento decisamente focoso. Si è mossa nel contesto dell’hard bop lievemente aggiornato, manifestando anche ottime doti di leader.

Fratello di Eddie Beal. Ha debuttato con Speed Webb nel 1929, ha suona poi con Les Hite nel 1930. Si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha suonato con l’orchestra diretta dal pianista Alex Hill, poi al Gran Terrace Hotel con Erkine Tate, ha suonato anche con Jimmie Noone, Frankie Jaxon, e nel 1933 con Louis Armstrong. Ha suonato con Carroll Dickerson, Noble Sissle, quindi è andato a New York dove come solista è diventato l’attrazione dei migliori Clubs. Ha fatto, in tale veste, una lunga tournée in Europa ed infine lo troviamo con un suo gruppo in giro per la California. Il suo pianista di riferimento è Earl Hines e non ha saputo affrancarsene.

Ha studiato pianoforte con sua madre e violino e percussione a scuola. Nel 1930 è arrivato a Los Angeles dove ha iniziato a lavorare come batterista ed in seguito come pianista. Ha iniziato a collaborare con Eearl Dancer e Charlie Echols, dal 1934 al 1936 ha suonato nel gruppo di Buck Clayton e con lui va a Shangay ed in Cina. E’ tornato in California ed ha fatto parte di un gruppo vocale con il quale prende parte anche and un film, ha registrato con Maxime Williams nel 1939. Dopo aver assolto gli obblighi militari ha riprende l’attività accompagnando Billie Holiday, poi Ivie Anderson, ha registrato con Jimmy Mundy, con Herb Jeffries, con Helen Humes nel 1950 e con Red Callender. Nella metà degli anni ’50 si è impegnato come compositore ed editore musicale. Nel 1973 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Tommy Dorsey e nel 1976 ha girato un film “Sparale” nel ruolo di un pianista.

Dopo la laurea si è trasferito a New York dove ha iniziato a lavorare. In seguito si è spostato nella West Coast per lavorare ad un film. Ha suonato spesso nella zona di Los Angeles mentre continua a lavorare per il cinema.

E’ nato in una famiglia di musicisti ed anche lui ha intrapreso la stessa carriera. Il primo ingaggio importante è con Charlie Ventura nel 1956, nel 1958 si è trasferito in California a Los Angeles dove ha suonato con Buddy Collette, Calvin Jackson, Buddy DeFranco, Bud Shank, Zoot Sims ed altri.

Grinnell, Iowa. 30/8/1904. – Rapids, IA, 9/3/1974.

Nel 1919 a quindici anni ha messo su una propria orchestra con la quale ha lavorato in stazioni radio. Nel 1933 si è trasferito a Chicago, dove ha studiato musica. Si è spostato a Seattle per un ingaggio con Eddie Neibauer e poi nel 1937 ha suonato con Jimmy McPartland al Three Deuces. Nel 1939 è entrato a far parte del gruppo di Bob Crosby, poi con Boyce Brown, con Wingy Manone nel 1940. Ha diretto un suo trio, ha suonato con Boyd Raeburn nel 1943 e con Eddie Stone dal 1943 al 1945 ed ha scritto arrangiamenti per Jess Stacy e per molti altri. Ha suonato anche con Sidney Bechet, Paul Mares, con Miff Mole nel 1950, con Muggsy Spanier nel 1951, con George Brunis dal 1953 al 1957, con Bob Scobey nel 1958. E’ ritornato con Brunis con il quale è rimasto sino alla fine degli anni’60. Classico chicagoans dell’ultima leva.

BEAR DOWN.

Termine usato negli anni trenta per indicare un musicista che suonava il jazz con grande passione ed emozione. Con questo titolo è stato inciso un brano da Andy Kirk ed i suoi Cloud Of Joy nel 1937.

BEARD JIM (P-SINT)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 26/8/1960.

Nel 1980 ha collaborato con la Mahavishnu Orchestra di John McLaughlin dove è entrato in sostituzione di Mitchell Forman. In seguito ha suonato con Dave Liebman, con Bill Evans, John Scofield, Michael Breker, poi con Wayne Shorter con il quale ha anche inciso un album nel 1987, ha registrato anche con Peter Erskine nel 1988. ha collaborato con Mike Stern, con Bob Berg, con Randy Breker, con Peter Erskine e moltissimi altri. Musicista dal carattere molto riservato, ha sempre rifiutato il protagonismo. E’ stato uno dei musicisti più attivo ed influente della scena del jazz elettrico contemporaneo. La sua musica ha sempre evitato la banalità ed è ricca di personalità. Soprattutto un grande organizzatore di suoni per tale dote le sue collaborazioni sono state richiestissime.

Egli con il suo sassofono ha tratto dagli stessi gli insegnamenti con molta sensibilità, ha evitato però imitazioni convenzionali. La sua musica ha tenuto in debita considerazione la cultura del passato nell’attualità, con estro, inventiva, agilità tecnica ed al feeling che un buon jazzista deve avere. Ormai é uno dei solisti italiani di maggior spicco che come tanti altri però ha trovato affermazione fuori dell’Italia, in Francia dove ha lavorato spesso con il gruppo di Aldo Romano.

All’età di sei anni si é trasferita con la famiglia a Amarilli in Texas ed in seguito a Plum Point nel Mississippi presso la nonna, che è stata la sua prima maestra di pianoforte. Ha frequentato lo Sweet Briar College in Virginia. In seguito a Menphis ha insegnato matematica, musica e gestione aziendale. Nei ritagli di tempo ha iniziato a comporre delle canzoni ed a cantarle. Ha iniziato a lavorare alla radio ed ha raggiunto il massimo della popolarità tra il 1943 ed il 1944 in un quiz musicale molto popolare. In seguito ha aperto un ufficio immobiliare a Ardsley, New York, che ha gestito sino al 1977.

Shreveport, Louisiana, 10/10/1960

Pianista molto versatile nato in una famiglia di musicisti. Suo nonno suonatore di trombone è stato per 50 anni insegnante nelle scuole dell’Arkansas, sua madre insegnante di musica e suo padre insegnante alla North Texas State University. A otto anni ha preso le sue prime lezioni di pianoforte, ha suonato senza molto impegno, la chitarra, la batteria ed il sassofono in piccole bande rock locali, alla fine ha deciso di essere un pianista di jazz. Nel 1977 si è trasferito con la famiglia a Los Angeles, dove nel 1980 è entrato nell’orchestra di Sergio Mendez con il quale vi è rimasto diversi anni. Ha scritto musica per spettacoli televisivi. Il suo momento di popolarità l’ha avuta con il quintetto di Freddie Hubbard ed in tour con Miles Davis nel 1989.

Mentre studiava alla Wilberforce University ha suonato in una banda locale. Ha suonato nel 1924 con Horace Henderson e ha registrato con King Oliver, Clarence Williams e James P. Johnson. Si è spostato a New York dove ha suonato con Bingie Madison, con Teddy Hill nel 1935 e con lui fa una tournée in Europa durante la quale ha modo di incidere con Django Reinhardt, con Dickie Wellse con Bill Coleman. Al ritorno in patria è stato ingaggiato da Don Redman nel 1938, poi con Roy Eldridge. Ha sostituito Chick Webb nella sua orchestra diretta da Ella Fitzgerald, ha suonato poi con John Kirby nel 1943, con Eddie Heywood nel 1944, con Ben Webster nel 1945, Sy Oliver e Earl Bostic. Negli anni ’50 ha lasciato la musica. Batterista dai molti limiti tecnici.

BEAT.

Letteralmente: movimento, inteso nel senso di “unità di battuta”. Nel jazz indica più in particolare il battere stesso di questo movimento, la pulsazione e per riflesso lo “swing” che ne deriva. Termine che oltre a significare il “ritmo” che si attribuiva allo “swing”, veniva anche usato come aggettivo per indicare: esausto, a pezzi, a terra. Come verbo il suo senso cambia in: truffare, fregare qualcuno. Poi vi sono altri sensi come: “beat the boards” (ballo tap dance) “beat up your drops” (tu parli troppo.

E’ stato senz’altro il musicista tradizionale più famoso dello Stato dell’Oregon e questa è l’opinione popolare. Ha diretto con successo la “Oregon Jazz band”. Ottimo clarinettista con quaranta anni di esperienza ha registrato diversi album, ha molto viaggiato ed ha fatto anche conferenze nelle scuole e suonato in molti club sia negli Stati Uniti che in Canada, Gran Bretagna e Europa. Musicista dallo stile fresco, scorrevole ed anche con un pizzico di humor. Nei suoi soli ricorda molto i clarinettisti di New Orleans e per qualche critico non è stato riconosciuto appieno il suo valore.

E’ stato un altro dei grandi clarinettisti dixieland e swing trascurato dal pubblico e dalla critica. Egli ha debuttato con Tommy Dorsey nel 1940, in seguito si è trasferito a Hollywood, dove oltre a lavorare freelance ha scritto per la radio, la TV e ha lavorato in sale d’incisione. Rapidamente si è fatto largo in un ambiente dominato da Paul Weston, Peggy Lee e Frank Sinatra e dove tra i gruppi musicali dominava Red Nichols. Appunto Nichols ha avuto grande influenza sulla sua musica ed anche dopo la sua morte Beau ha continuato a tenerne acceso il ricordo. Nel 1970 è venuto in Europa, in Inghilterra ha avuto grande successo suonando nei migliori Club londinesi.

Lo stesso anno si è sposato con Micheline Degner, una pianista tedesca di Berlino e si è trasferito a New York. Qui ha studiato con Rufus Reid e Buster Williams ed ha iniziato a lavorare nei club newyorkesi. Ha fatto parte del quintetto di Wycliffe Gordon, del trio di Eric Lewis e con Allan Harris. Ha insegnato all’Hunter College. BEAUREGARD NATHAN (G-VC)

Ashland, Mississippi. 1867. – Menphis, Tennessee. 1970.

Musicista cieco dalla nascita suonatore di banjo ed in seguito di chitarra. Conosciutissimo nelle strade di Menphis nei primi anni del secolo. In seguito le sue tracce sono sparite. Negli anni’60 il dipartimento della cultura degli Stati Uniti ha deciso di fare delle ricerche sul blues dei primordi ed i suoi protagonisti. Bill Hart ha scoperto e ha presentato al Menphis Country Blues Festival del 1968 il nostro Nathan quando ha compiuto già 101 anni. Gli sono stati fatti registrare anche dei dischi che però hanno acquistato solo un valore storico, poichè Nathan a quella età non ha potuto esprimere le sue vere capacità e abilità musicali.

BEBOP.

Stile del jazz nato all’inizio degli anni ’40. Viene usato spesso nel termine bop, per semplicità. A volte viene anche citato come sinonimo del jazz moderno. I principali artefici di questo nuova musica sono Dizzy Gillepsie, Charlie Parker e Thelonious Monk.

BEBOP & BEYOND.

Gruppo fondato dal sassofonista Mel Martin a San Francisco nel 1983. Gli altri componenti del gruppo sono stati il trombettista Warren Gales, il sassofonista John Handy, il pianista George Gables, il Bassista Frank Tusa ed il batterista Eddie Marshall. Alla fine degli anni ’80 Gables ha lasciato il gruppo, anche se ha preso parte alle registrazioni del 1990 con Jeff Chambers e Donald Bailey che sostituiscono Tusa e Marshall. Nel 1991 è entra a far parte del gruppo il chitarrista Randy Vincent. Nel 1998 Martin ha diretto la East Coast band, ma ha continuato comunque a dirigere e scrivere per il Bebop & Beyond.

Dopo le prime esperienze con Giancarlo Crea e diversi concerti nei quali ha accompagnato Albert King, Johnny Copeland, Phil Guy ed altri, si è trasferito a Chicago nel 1990, dove ha lavorato con Otis Rush, Sugar Blue, Lucky Peterson, Billy Branch ed altri. E’ tornato in Italia e ha fondato il”Nick Becattini & Serious Fun”, con il quale ha ottenuto successo di pubblico e di critica. Nel dicembre del 1998 è stato pubblicato l’album “Unleaded”, che ha ottenuto un grande successo. Chitarrista al quale la permanenza negli Stati Uniti ha dato versatilità, una certa determinazione ed anche quella necessaria dose di umiltà. Ora il suo stile è più articolato, qua e la si notano riferimenti ai maestri chicagoani o texano californiani, ma essi sono sempre personalizzati. Il suo fraseggio è dinamico, energico e variegato nelle atmosfere.
