BANG BILLY WILLIAM (VIOL)
Mobile, Alabama. 20/9/1947- Harlem, 11/4/2011.
Giocando a basket gli è stato dato il soprannome di “Billy Bang”, che poi ha conservato anche quando ha lasciato l’attività sportiva per dedicarsi completamente alla musica. Ha esordito nell’orchestra di Sun Ra, poi ha studiato con Leroy Jenkins e nel 1977 ha messo su il suo ”String Trio of New York” insieme a James Hemery e John Lindberg. Ha fatto tournée con Jemeel Moondoc in Europa. In seguito ha tentato diverse soluzioni e ha formato diversi altri gruppi: i ”Forbidden planet”, “The Jazz Doctor”, “String Trio”, “The Group”. Violinista dallo stile travolgente, ha ripudiato sia la maniera classica che quella dell’Est europeo di suonare il violino, infondendo nella propria musica il blues delle origini.

BANJO CLAN.
Gruppo tradizionale nato a Genova nel 1964 nel contesto del Louisiana Jazz Club, su iniziativa di Egidio Colombo e Aldo Aroasio sul modello dei famosi “Banjo Kings”. In seguito il loro organico è cambiato e ne è venuta fuori una formula originalissima di Dixieland nella quale erano utilizzati tre banjo accompagnati da una chitarra ed un basso. Ha partecipato a molte manifestazioni sempre ottenendo un buon successo.

Altrimenti detto: banjouke, banjo ukulele o ukulele banjo. Strumento che ha le corde della stessa lunghezza ed accordatura dell’ukulele, ma rispetto ad esso ha un suono più stridente. Strumento poco usato nel jazz, ricordiamo solo il cantante inglese Al Bowly e poi Joe Morris.
BANK DANNY, DANIEL BERNARD (SB)
New York, 17/7/1922.
Ha suonato con l’orchestra di Charlie Barnet dal 1942 al 1944 e dal 1948 al 1949 e con la quale ha registrato diversi dischi. Dal 1945 al 1946 ha suonato con Benny Goodman, dal 1946 al 1947 con Paul Whiteman, con Mel Powell, con Jimmy Dorsey dal 1947 al 1948, con Artie Shaw dal 1949 al 1950, con Tommy Dorsey dal 1950 al 1951. In seguito ha suonato quasi sempre a New York, dove ha registrato anche con Charlie Parker, con Dizzy Gillespie nel 1954, con Cannonball Adderley nel 1956. Ha suonato con Ralph Burns, Gene Krupa, Oscar Pettiford, Urbie Green, Chubby Jackson e ha accompagnato la cantante Helen Merrill. Ha collaborato con Miles Davis e con Gil Evans dal 1957 al 1962, con i quali ha lavorato anche in televisione. Ha suonato con Johnny Hodges nel 1970. E’ tra i fondatori del “New York Saxophone Quartet”, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1973. In seguito ha lavorato freelance, alternando il clarinetto, al flauto, al sax baritono. Nel 1986 ha suonato con Benny Goodman, ha fatto parte della “American Jazz Orchestra” e della big band diretta da Loren Schoenberg e Jimmy Heath. Musicista che non ha mai gestito da leader un suo gruppo, in compenso si calcola che abbia registrato altre 10.000 album di jazz o di altri generi musicali. E’ stato anche un buon giocatore di base ball.

BANKHEAD TOMMY (VC-G)

Si è trasferito nel 1949 a St.Louis nel Missouri. Bluesmen dalle capacità espressive notevoli che però è riuscito solo a 52 anni ad entrare per la prima volta in sala di incisione come leader. La sua pur esigua documentazione sonora disponibile è sufficiente però ad inserirlo a pieno titolo tra i gagliardi veterani usciti solo negli ultimi anni dall’anonimato, anche se ha suonato con i maggiori interpreti del blues. E’ stato sempre fedele allo stile tradizionale delle correnti mississipiane. Egli ha rifiutato le ostentazioni solistiche alla chitarra, ha preferito le linee armoniche più semplici ed asciutte, che anche se di aspetto musicale povero sono di impatto sonoro intense e penetranti. Bluesmen dalla voce carica di tensione.

Alton, Illinois. 1905 circa. – Tokyo 19/10/1967.
Cantante che ha debuttato nel Musical Magpies del 1926 a Cleveland come cantante e batterista. Protetto dal famoso impresario Irving Mills, che lo ha invitato a trasferirsi a New York dove gli ha procurato molto lavoro. Ha registrato con Henry Allen, Pee Wee Russell, Fats Waller, Zutty Singleton. E’ entrato a far parte dell’orchestra di Nobble Sissle e dal 1938 al 1951 è diventato l’attrazione del famoso locale “Diamond Horseshoe”. Nel 1952 ha fatto una tournée in Europa, quindi ha soggiornato in Olanda, in Francia ed Inghilterra dove ha suonato e registrato con Freddy Randall. In seguito ha fatto una tournée in Asia e Australia quindi ha finito per stabilirsi in Giappone.

Ha girato l’Europa con le truppe U.S.A. e ha fatto il suo debutto discografico con una bop band diretta dal trombettista Thurmond ”Trumpet“ Young nel marzo del 1950 a Vienna. Ha suonato con gruppi in locali pubblici e militari riservati al personale di colore. In seguito è andato a Parigi dove ha registrato con Gerry Wiggins. Nel dicembre del 1950 ha suonato con Bill Coleman sia in Svizzera che a Le Havre in Francia. E’ tornato a Parigi qui ha accompagnato Hazel Scott, Buck Clayton, Lionel Hampton, Don Byas nel 1953, Albert Nicholas, Andrè Persiani. Nel 1954 è entrato nell’orchestra di Michel Attenoux ed ha accompagnato in un lungo tour europeo Sidney Bechet.

Il primo ingaggio conosciuto è quello con il trombettista Charlie Echols a Los Angeles nel 1933. Poi nel 1937 con Claude Kennedy al Wave Cafè di Long Beach in California, poi con Emerson Scott al Paradise Cafè di Los Angeles. Nella sua carriera ha sempre privilegiato gli ingaggi con musicisti della West Coast. Ha guidato anche un gruppo con il quale ha registrato.

Voce gospel cresciuta a Buffalo, New York. Ha iniziato a cantare in chiesa e ha debuttato ufficialmente nel mondo della canzone nel 1966. Voce blues di origini nordiche, è stata definita la voce più pura del soul, uno degli stilisti migliori degli anni ’60. Cantante molto valido anche nell’interpretare ballads. Il brano più famoso del suo repertorio è stato: “Open The Door To Your Heart”. E’ stato ucciso in un alterco.

E’ cresciuto in una famiglia di musicisti ed ha iniziato la carriera alla fine degli anni ’30 suonando in diverse jazz band. Assimilati gli elementi del bop nel 1948 ha guidato un suo gruppo il “Boptet”, con il quale ha suonato gli standards ed anche sue composizioni. In seguito è andato in Inghilterra dove si è affermato come compositore, scrivendo per gruppi d’avanguardia e tradizionali. Nel 1973 è ritornato in patria quando ormai è un compositore affermato, ha lavorato per la Camberra School of Music, per il New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, dove ha avuto un ruolo molto importante nello sviluppo del jazz in Australia.

BANKS WILLIE (VC)

Voce che è una leggenda del gospel. Ha iniziato a cantare all’età di cinque anni, ha frequentato la Jackson Southernaires e nel 1968 ha fondato un proprio gruppo i “Southernaires”. Ha debutta to discograficamente nel 1972. In seguito ha fondato i “Messangers”, che per un decennio saranno i messaggeri dell’autentico canto gospel moderno. Il 6 luglio del 1981 ha rischiato di morire in un incidente stradale e dopo un lungo periodo di convalescenza ha ripreso a lavorare nel 1988. Voce del moderno gospel soul, dalla timbro caldo di baritono, pieno di imponenza e tristezza.

BANSIGU BIG BAND.
Orchestra attiva a Genova dall’inizio del 1990. Il suo nome è un antico termine dialettale che significa “altalena” che quindi si ricollega scherzosamente al concetto dello swing. Banda affiatata e nelle cui file agiscono diversi ottimi musicisti ed arrangiatori, come Leveratto, che è anche il direttore artistico dell’orchestra, Silvestri, Capurro e Casati.

I suoi strumenti sono: l’”oud”, uno strumento a corde, il “tarbuka” un particolare tamburo, il “ney” uno strumento a fiato fatto da canne accoppiate. Si è avvicinato al jazz attraverso musicisti in visita in Marocco. A 18 anni si è trasferito in Spagna ed ha studiato al “Taller de Jazz”. Ha iniziato a collaborare con maestri del flamenco, ha messo su il gruppo “Al-Fatihah” riconosciuto come gruppo leader della musica del Medio Oriente. Ha introdotto i suoi strumenti nel jazz e nel flamenco spagnolo. Nel 1989 è andato negli Stati Uniti a Portland nell’Oregon, dove ha lavorato alle musiche di spettacoli teatrali. Nel 2000 è tornato in Marocco insieme alla moglie Julia Banzi una delle rare chitarriste di flamenco e laureata in etnomusicologia all’Università della California di Santa Barbara. Ha fatto tour in Europa e composto musiche per la radio, TV e colonne musicali cinematografiche.

Musicista brasiliano, che ha praticato forse tutti gli strumenti a percussione del suo paese e del mondo. Si è stabilito a New York, negli anni ’80, ha suonato con Paquito D’Rivera e poi con John Zorn. Ha suonato anche con Lurie Anderson e con Herbie Mann, dimostrando anche la sua grande versatilità. Ha suonato con Gaetano Veloso, nel 1991 con Marisa Monte e ha accompagnato cantanti come Cassandra Wilson e Holly Cole. Nel suo curriculum artistico si parla di un percussionista a livello internazionale, nel pop, nel jazz ed altri generi musicali. Nel 1996 ha collaborato con Michael Tilson Thomas e la sua New World Symphony Orchestra, con Nana Vasconcelos, con Marc Ribot ed altri. Come compositore ha prodotto una musica gioiosa e scherzosa.

Ha diretto la Silver Leaf Band, una delle orchestre più importanti di New Orleans, dal 1896 al 1917. La formazione base era composta dal cornettista Hippolyte Charles, dal trombonista Henry Lambert, dal clarinettista Sam Dutrey, dal banconista Oscar Robinson, dal bassista Johnny Predonce e dal batterista Ernest Rogers. Si sono alternati anche il trombonista Honoré Dutrey, il banjonista Phil Nickerson, il chitarrista George Sayles ed il batterista Paul Barbarin. Albert Baptiste è stato uno dei decani tra i musicisti di New Orleans, e ne rappresenta una istituzione.

Insieme al fratello George sono stati protagonisti della storia del jazz di New Orleans. Figlio di Theogene V. Baquet direttore della Excelsior Brass Band, ha debuttato nella Reliance Brass Band di Jack Laine, in seguito ha fatto parte del gruppo di musicisti fondatori della Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Nel 1915 si è trasferito a New York dove ha registrato per la Okeh con la Original New Orlean Jazz Band. E’ tornato a New Orleans dove ha continuato a suonare in varie bande, tra le quali quella di Jack Papa Laine.

E’ stato uno dei pionieri nella storia del Jazz. E’ nato in una famiglia di musicisti creoli, il padre e due fratelli erano clarinettisti, ha debuttato con la Onward Brass Band intorno al 1900. Nel 1902 ha lasciato New Orleans al seguito di gruppi di minstrells e vi è ritornato per suonare con John Robichaux nel 1904, poi con Buddy Bolden, Buddy Petit, Freddie Keppard, Jimmy Noone, King Oliver, la Superior Band nel 1906, con la Magnolia Band dal 1908 al 1914. E’ entrato nella Original Creole Band di Bill Johnson a Chicago, ma è con Luis Russell che ha raggiunto la fama quando questa formazione faceva da sfondo alle imprese del giovane Armstrong. In seguito si è trasferito a Filadelfia dove ha diretto un suo gruppo. Ha avuto come allievo Sidney Bechet e ne è stato anche il maggior ispiratore. Tipico clarinettista di New Orleans, il suo stile già subito maturo è stato definito: mutevole, aereo, volubile e dalla tipica chiarezza creola.

Altro musicista di New Orleans protagonista della vita musicale della città alla fine dell’800. E’ stato celebre anche per essere stato il padre di George e Achille. E’ stato il leader della Excelsior Brass Band, banda importante, nella quale ha lavorato il trombonista Sidney Desvignes, Honoré Dutrey e Buddy Johnson, Alphonse Picou e John Robichaux.

Ha iniziato a studiare privatamente pianoforte, batteria e tromba ed ha frequentato la Howard University. Agli inizi degli anni ’60 si è messo in luce per i suoi articoli sul jazz, ha scritto per il Down Beat, Jazz Review. Pubblica “Blues People” nel 1963 e Black Music nel 1967, che sono stati i primi studi di uno scrittore nero sul jazz. Importanti documenti che dal lato sociologico sono un valido mezzo per capire la cultura afro-americana. Le sue attività lo hanno coinvolto in molti progetti della sua comunità. Egli ha fondato il “Black Arts Repertory Theatre-School nel 1964 e nel 1980 ha iniziato anche ad insegnare. Egli ha avuto profonda influenza nella critica del jazz, esaminando anche i lati politici della musica nera.

Ha fatto parte del Lucky Thompson’s All Stars, ha fondato il gruppo Rhythm Bombardiers con i quali ha registrato con Vic Dickenson, con Willie Smith e Dizzy Gillespie. Ha iniziato a prendere lezioni di clarinetto a 10 anni nella scuola a Denver. Ha continuato a suonare il sassofono prendendo lezioni private. E’ andato a Las Vegas, facendo parte della All-Stars Ensemble Jazz Big Band del Colorado. A Las Vegas ha vinto una borsa di studio e ha ottenuto nel 1977 un Bachelor of Arts e nel 1982 un Master of Music dal UNVL. Ha iniziato la carriera freelance nelle orchestre di Las Vegas. Nel 1993 si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove si è esibito con il suo “Jazz Quartet” e con il suo “Jeff Jazz Trio Barash” con il quale ha lavorato spesso in TV. Ha partecipato a molti Festival Internazionali in giro per il mondo. Ha collaborato durante la sua carriera con Louie Bellson, Joe Williams, Tony Bennett, Gene Harris, Charles McPherson, Monk Montgomery, Reggie Workman, Doc Severinsen, Snooky Young, Cat Anderson, Bill Chase, Carl Fontana, Jake Hanna, Lou Levy, Harold Land, Don Menza, Joe Romano, Joe Bonner.

Musicisti di origine italiana, sono stati i primi a capire la potenziale spettacolarità dei gruppi di blues neri. Quindi sono stati i primi ad organizzare nel 1907 un circuito di teatri per le comunità di colore nelle località del Sud. Il loro marchio era TOBA (Theatre Owners Booking Agenzy) che nonostante le paghe da fame distribuite ha garantito per molti anni lavoro a moltissimi artisti neri. Sono arrivati a controllare circa ottanta teatri.
BARBARIN ISIDORE, JOHN (MELLOPH-TUBA)
New Orleans, 24/9/1872. -New Orleans, 12/6/1960.
Altro musicista molto importante di New Orleans. Nel 1889 è entrato nella Onward Brass Band. Ha lasciato il gruppo nel 1898 ed è andato con la Excelsior Brass Band. In seguito ha fatto parte della Tuxedo Brass Band. Tra il 1915 ed il 1918 ha lavorato in orchestrine da ballo. E’ tornato in auge nel periodo del revival, registrando con Bunk Johsnon e con la Original Zenith Brass Band. E’ stato il padre di Louis e Paul due altri importanti musicisti di New Orleans.
BARBARIN LOUIS, “LIL BARB” (DR)
New Orleans, 24/10/1902. – New Orleans, 12/5/1997.
Fratello di Paul, è considerato uno dei più importanti batteristi della sua epoca. Egli è figlio di Isidore altro monumento del jazz di New Orleans. Ha preso lezioni da Louis Cottrell Sr. ed ha ottenuto un primo ingaggio nella Onward Brass Band nel 1918. Ha suonato con Sidney Desvignes ed altri gruppi che lavoravano sui battelli fluviali. Ha lavorato nell’orchestra da ballo di Kid Renae nel 1937 e poi è entrato nella Tuxedo Dixieland di Papa Celestin. Ha fatto anche parte di un quartetto vocale, ha collaborato poi con Punch Miller in programmi televisivi, ha suonato con il fratello Paul nel 1965, con Alvin Alcorn nel 1967, con la Original Tuxedo Jazz Band. Nel 1968 ha accompagnato alla televisione svedese la cantante Sweet Emma Barrett, ha suonato poi con Albert Burbank nel 1968. Negli anni ’70 ha viaggiato molto, ha registrato in Inghilterra con la New Orleans All-Star Jazz Band, ha girato l’Europa con la New Orleans Joymakers nel 1972. Ha continuato la sua attività e negli ultimi anni è una delle stelle della Preservation Hall.

Ha iniziato presto a studiare musica e trombone e per sei anni è stato al seguito dello zio Paul nella Oward Brass Band. Nel corso degli anni ha studiato altri strumenti, come la tuba, il sax baritono e la batteria. Nel 1971 ha suonato con il cugino Danny Baker nella “Fairview Baptist Christian Church Band”. Ha continuato negli anni a partecipare attivamente a parate stradali e festival.

BARBARIN PAUL (DR)
New Orleans, 5/5/1901. – New Orleans, 10/2/1969.
Musicista figlio di Isidore e zio del chitarrista Danny Baker, ha iniziato a praticare la musica suonando il clarinetto. All’epoca egli idolatrava il batterista King Oliver Happy Malton che lo ha convinto a scegliere come strumento la batteria. Ha debuttato alla batteria con la Silver Leaf Orchestra e poi è passato nella Young Olympia Band. E’ stato ingaggiato da Luis Russell con il quale ha suonato nei migliori club di New Orleans. Nel 1924 si è trasferito a Chicago, dove ha suonato con Amos White e nei Dixie Syncopators di Joe Oliver. Nel 1927 è tornato nella sua città, ha suonato con Fats Pichon e Armand Piron. Nel 1928 si è trasferito a New York chiamato da Luis Russell, qui ha raggiunto il massimo della popolarità, consacrandosi tra i migliori batteristi dell’epoca. Ha fatto parte del gruppo di Louis Armstrong nel 1935, con Henry Allen nel 1942, con Sidney Bechet nel 1943, in seguito è tornato a New Orleans dove ha diretto propri gruppi. E’ morto suonando colpito da collasso mentre è a capo della sua “Onward Brass Band” in una parata carnevalesca.

Letteralmente “Costa dei Barbari”. Famoso quartiere del porto di San Francisco, dove tra il 1890 ed il 1917 regnava sovrano il crimine ed il vizio. E’ stato anche il titolo di un brano “Barbary Coast Blues” inciso da Edgar Hayes. Su di esso è stato anche scritto un interessante libro di Tom Stoddard ”Jazz On The Barbary Coast”. Sulla Barbary Coast sono stati attivi molti musicisti e orchestre sia locali che arrivati da New Orleans, come quelle di Kid Ory, Freddie Keppard, Papa Mut Carey, Frankie Dusen e molti altri.
BARBARO CLIFFORD (DR)
New York, 7/6/1947.
Nella metà degli anni ’70 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Charles Tolliver sino al 1975, ha diretto anche un suo gruppo a Edmonton in Canada, ha registrato con John Hicks nel 1975. Nel 1980 ha lavorato in Giappone, ha registrato con Sadik Hakim a Tokyo, ha diretto la Cheba Band a Osaka. Dal 1984 al 1989 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Jon Hendricks e dal 1989 al 1991 ha suonato nell’orchestra di Sun Ra, con la quale ha registrato ed è venuto in tournée in Europa. Nel 1993 ha diretto un gruppo insieme Ralph Lalama e nell’ottobre del 1995 ha suonato nel N.Y.Hardbop Quintet, nel 1996 ha registrato con Marlena Shaw. L’ultimo gruppo che ha diretto è stato il “Red And Blue” dal 1997.
BARBARO GIANNI (SA)
Formia, Latina, Lazio, Italia. 1974.
Sassofonista che ha studiato al conservatorio di Napoli con Bruno Tommaso e si è laureato nel 2002. Si è trasferito a Copenhagen, dove vive e lavora. Promotore del sinestetic jazz, che dovrebbe aiutare ed incoraggiare l’improvvisazione e che ha dato anche il nome al quintetto che dirige con successo, molto attivo in Europa.

Il suo vero nome è Robert Hicks quello di Bob Barbeque gli è stato messo dallo scopritore di talenti Don Hornsby. E’ nato in una famiglia di contadini, si è trasferito con il fratello Charley ”Lincoln” Hicks nella Contea di Newton, qui Savanah ”Deep” Weaver ha insegnato a suonare la chitarra ed a cantare ai due fratelli. Hanno iniziato a suonare alle feste private intorno ad Atlanta. Ha incontrato Don Hornsby che il 25 marzo del 1927 gli ha fatto registrare un disco per la Columbia e che lo ha fatto conoscere facendolo scritturare a diversi spettacoli insieme al fratello. Nel 1930 ha partecipato ad una sessione con i già famosi Georgia Cotton Pickers. E’ considerato un grande nel suo genere.

BARBEE JOHN HENRY WILLIAM GEORGE TUCKER. (VC-G)
Henning, Tennessee. 14/11/1905. – Chicago, 4/11/1964.
Ancora bambino già animava le feste con la sua chitarra, da giovinetto ha dovuto darsi alla macchia perché incolpato ingiustamente dell’uccisione di un bianco. E’ ricomparso dopo qualche anno con il nome di John Henry Barbee. Ha lavorato con Sleepy John Estes, poi con Big Joe Williams, nel 1934 con Sunnyland Slim a Menphis, con John Lee Sonny Boy Williams nel Tennessee. Ha cercato sempre di non restare fisso in un posto per timore di essere riconosciuto. Nei primi anni’40 si è fermato a Chicago dove è stato occupato in una lavanderia e si è esibito con Moody Jones, Blue Smith, Eddie Hines, Jimmy Rogers. Si è dedicato alla vendita dei gelati e in questa attività lo ha ritrovato all’inizio degli anni ’60 lo scopritore di talenti Willie Dixon, che ha cercato di rimetterlo in sesto e farlo lavorare anche se in precarie condizioni di salute. Nel 1964 lo ha portato in Europa in tournè nel ”American Folk Blues Festival”, dopo poche settimane tornato in patria è morto. Cantante e chitarrista dalla voce robusta, dura ma molto efficace.

Hornell, New York, 21/5/1920. – Bronxville, New York, 18-6-2007.
Musicista che ha studiato musica allo Julliard Institute, si è dedicato al basso tuba che ha suonato nella filarmonica di Kansas City. Ha suonato con Charlie Ventura, Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, la Sauter/Finegan, Pete Rugolo, Ralph Burns, Gil Evans, John Coltrane. E’ stato nel jazz moderno il primo solista di questo strumento, ottimo in sezione, ma anche come solista. E’ riuscito a creare dello swing, con uno strumento non proprio adatto allo scopo. Ha partecipato a diverse famose e magiche incisioni: con l’orchestra di Gil Evans a “Birth Of The Cool” di Miles Davis, sempre con Davis anche a “Miles Ahead”, a Sketches Of Spain”, ad “Africa Brass”di John Coltrane e a “The New Birth Of The Cool” di Gerry Mulligan del 1992.
BARBER BILLY (P)

Musicista figlio del pianista e compositore William C.Barber, noto come Bill Barber Sr e di una cantante. Ha studiato pianoforte e composizione. Ha avuto subito successo nel campo commerciale soprattutto come compositore di musica sentimentale, per il grande pubblico televisivo per il quale spesso ha scritto. Ha lavorato anche molto alla radio, ha ricevuto due nomination per il Grammy Award. Pianista di jazz mainstream, ha scritto canzoni per bambini, agli inizi degli anni ’70 ed ha collaborato con diversi famosi artisti folk. Ha registrato anche un album insieme ai suoi due figli. Dan Friedman ha composto un brano a lui dedicato intitolato “Lizbarber”.
