VUCKOVICH LARRY (P)
Kotor, Montenegro. 8/12/1936.
Il padre si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti nel 1910, vi ha vissuto sino al 1921 ed ha ottenuto la cittadinanza Americana, così Larry è nato cittadino americano. Ha studiato al Conservatorio di Kotor, pianoforte classico, musica balcanica e per il teatro. Nel 1951 si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti a San Francisco, ha suonato nei club ed ha ricevuto delle lezioni da Vince Guaraldi. Ha frequentato lo State College della città e ha studiato con Richard Wyands. Nel 1965 ha debuttato con Jon Hendricks, con il quale ha fatto delle tournèe in America ed in Europa e ha preso parte al Festival Jazz di Monterey. Ha fatto parte del quartetto di Elvin Jones e di Booker Ervin. E’tornato in Europa con il gruppo di Philly Jo Jones, ,partecipando al Festival Jazz di Pescara, ha registrato con Mark Murphy ed è stato il pianista titolare del Domicile Club di Monaco, in Germania, dal 1969 al 1970 e qui ha accompagnato Dexter Gordon, Clifford Jordan, Slide Hampton, Dave Holland ed altri. Nel 1970 è tornato negli Stati Uniti, ha lavorato in duo con Vince Guaraldi e con il gruppo di Endricks. Dal 1979 al 1983 è stato presente a Keystone Korner, dove ha accompagnato diversi ospiti insieme a Larry Grenadier. Ha partecipato spesso ai programmi della NRP, “Dowtown Jazz”e “Jazz Alive”. Si stabilisce a New York nel 1985, ha guidato un quintetto insieme a Charles McPherson e Tom Harrell, si è spesso esibito in duo con Michael Moore, Walter Booker, Harvie Swartz. Nel 1987 ha lavorato a San Francisco in trio con Booker e Jimmy Cobb, con Frank Morgan. E’ tornato a San Francisco nel 1990 per un lungo ingaggio al “Club 36” del Grand Hyatt Hotel ed un altro in trio al “Shangai 1930”. Ha partecipato alla serie “Club Date”della PBS ed alla fine degli anni ’90 ha fondato una compagnia discografica e l’etichetta Tetrachord Music.

Pianista, compositore, arrangiatore e direttore d’orchestra. Ha preso parte con successo al Festival Internazionale del Jazz di Montreux con il gruppo di Clark Terry nel 1969. Nel 1981 ha messo su il “Super Trio”e nel 1986 il “Creative Ensemble” e ha combinato il Budapest Brass Ensemble di 22 elementi con il Super Trio. Nel 1990 ha formato il CAE Trio insieme al bassista Balazs Berkes ed il batterista Elemer Balazs. Da pianista ha accompagnato in molte registrazioni.

Ha iniziato a suonare la fisarmonica a quattro anni, nel 1964 ha ricevuto lezioni di clarinetto e fisarmonica ed ha continuato a studiare clarinetto al conservatorio di Klaipedas e all’Accademia di musica Lithuanian e nel 1968 anche il sassofono con Vladimir Chekasin. Dal 1982 al 1988 ha diretto un suo quartetto ed ha collaborato con Steve Lacy, Theo Jorgensmann e Tomasz Stanko ed altri. Nel 1984 ha registrato con Vyacheslav Ganelin, con il quale nel 1989 ha tenuto un concerto a Vienna. Nel 1991 ha formato un duo con la cantante folk connazionale Veronica Povilioniene. Ha registrato in duo con il batterista Arkadij Gotesman, in trio con il pianista Christoph Baumann ed il bassista Jacques Siron. Negli anni ’90 insieme a Ganelin e Gotesman ha suonato in Israele ed in Lituania e ha registrato nel 1995. Nel suo jazz ha introdotto anche elementi di musica folk lituana.

Nel 1971 ha formato il gruppo Chamberpot ed ha collaborato con Fred Van Hove, Tony Oxley, Paul Rotherford, Barry Guy, Derek Bailey, con Paul Lytton e con Radu Malfatti, con Howard Riley e con Barry Guy, con la London Jazz Composers Orchestra, con Guy e Paul Rutherford, la vocalista Vanessa Mackness, con l’”Electric String Trio”, con la King Ubu Orchestru, con Rudiger Carl, con George Grawe, il Trio Raphiphi con Malfatti e Phil Minton, con il quale ha anche registrato, con Mario Schiano, con Evan Parker. Figlio di un batterista e direttore musicale scolastico, ha iniziato a suonare la batteria a sei anni e su invito del padre anche il violino e la viola. Ha studiato privatamente con Chuck Flores dal 1973 al 1977 e alla California State University di Long beach dal 1978 al 1980. Ha iniziato a suonare musica rock e musica pop in gruppi a Disneyland e nel 1978 con il gruppo Bill Watrous. Nel 1979 ha aftto una tournèe con la cantante pop Leslie Uggams e per diverso tempo con Frank Zappa, con il quale ha registrato molti album. Ha collaborato con Allan Holdsworth, con il quale ha fatto dei tour ed ha registrato. Nel 1985 ha fatto unn tour con il gruppo rock australiano “Men the Work ”e nel 1987 insieme a Barbra Streisand nello spettacolo televisivo “One Voice”. Ha collaborato anche con John Patitucci, Joe Sample, Bill Bruford, Louis Conte, con Doudou Ndjaye Rose nel World Drummer Ensemble nel 1996 e dal 1989 al 1992 ha fatto delle tournèe ed ha registrato con il chitarrista Andy Summers, con il Banned from Utopia. Ha avuto il battesimo del successo al Sacramento Jazz Jubilee nel quale è stato presente per diversi anni. Il suo repertorio è il jazz felice e spensierato degli anni ’20. Il gruppo è stato costituito negli anni ’70. Ha preso parte a molte manifestazioni, anche negli Stati Uniti. Nello stile il gruppo ricalca quello di Turk Murphy.

Nel 1916 ha diretto la sua prima orchestra alla Queen’s Hall di Chicago. Poi per diversi anni è stato il direttore musicale ed accompagnatore di Lucille Hegamin, con la quale ha lavorato a Seattle ed a New York. All’inizio degli anni ’20 è tornato a Chicago dove ha suonato con Doc Cook. In seguito ha rimesso su una orchestra nella quale ha come solisti Eddie South e Teddy Weatherford che oltre a Chicago si è esibita nel 1926 al Savoy Ballroom e nel 1927 al Club Alabam di New York. Ha suonato anche con altri gruppi e dopo il 1930 ha girato il Midwest.

Chitarra, bassista, compositore, arrangiatore e anche produttore. E’ stato famoso tra gli anni ’70 e gli anni ’80 come creatore di canzoni per bambini. Ha diretto dal 1966 al 1972 e 1976 il gruppo “Made In Sweden” e dal 1971 al 1972 il “Solar Plexus”. In seguito è andato negli Stati Uniti dove ha fatto parte dei “Blood, Sweat & Tears”, nel 1979 ha collaborato con la “Saturday Night Live Band” fino al 1985.Ha diretto la sua “Joije Wademius Bans” di jazz e funk. Ha fatto parte di altri importanti gruppi rock e nel jazz del gruppo di Ronnie Cuber, con il quale ha anche registrato nel 1985. Ha collaborato anche con Steely Dan, Artha Franklin, Diana Ross, Dr.John, David Saborn, James Brown, Paul Simon, Joe Thomas, Dionne Worwick, Roberta Flack, Paul Desmond, Jim Hall, John McLaughlin, Luther Vandross ed altri. Nel 1970 ha ricevuto in Svezia un Grammy.

Trombonista ma soprattutto arrangiatore. Ha iniziato a lavorare per la TV, poi a fatto parte delle orchestre di Jack Dorsey e di quella di George Fame. In seguito organizza un gruppo insieme a Peter Lemer. Ha collaborato con Neil Ardley e la sua “New Jazz Orchestra”, nel 1969 suona con John Burch, con Diana Ross. Negli anni ’70 suona con gli “Ublaba” di Barbara Thompson. Buon arrangiatore specie nei gruppi di jazz rock, i Rolling STones, i Small Face. Ha inoltre inciso con Ray Russell, John Hiseman, Graham Collier, Judy Garland, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Dionne Warwick, Tony Bennett, Maynard Ferguson, ed altri.
WADUD ABDUL, KHABIR, DE VAUGHN RONALD (CELLO)
Cleveland, Ohio. 30/4/1947.
Dei suoi undici fra fratelli e sorelle quasi tutti si interessano di musica e naturalmente anche lui a nove anni ha iniziato a studiare e ha scelto il violoncello poichè il professore del conservatorio di Oberlin aveva bisogno tale strumento nell’orchestra della scuola. Dal 1966 al 1967 ha studiato alla Yungstown State University e poi dal 1968 al 1970 all’Oberlin College Conservatory. Diplomatosi ha lavorato per sette anni con la New Synphony Orchestra e ci sono tutte le premesse per iniziare una ottima carriera classica. Entra nell’ambiente jazzistico di Cleveland e ne viene contagiato, ma continua comunque a suonare anche in gruppi classici. Ha formato con il sassofonista Yusef Mumin ed il batterista Hassan Al Hut, il Black Unity Trio, ha suonato con Norman Howard, con Stanley Cowell, con Cecil Bridgewater. Ha incontrato Julius Hemphill con il quale ha avuto un rapporto privilegiato e in questo periodo ha assunto il nome mussulmano. Ha fatto parte dell’AACM, mette su un trio con Harold Danko e Mike Smith, nel quale suona anche il basso. Ha fatto anche una esperienza di lavoro negli studi della musica commerciale, incide con Sammy Davis Jr.,Barry White e Diana Ross. Nel 1972 ha guadagnato un master al SUNY, Stony Brook. Ha collaborato con Arthur Blythe, ha registrato con Frank Lowe, nel 1977 con George Lewis, con Oliver Lake, Leroy Jenkins, Sam Rivers, Cecil Taylor, David Murray, Chico Freeman, Barry Altshul, Richard Abrams, Charles Bobo Shaw, la Human Art Ensemble. Dal 1977 rinuncia quasi completamente alla musica classica, Nel 1980 ha suonato con Anthony Davis in varie occasioni : in trio con James Newton, con Bob McFerrin, nell’ottetto Episteme e nell’opera X di Davis con la grande orchestra. Ha suonato con John Purcell, nel 1985 ha fondato il Black Swan Quartet, ha fatto parte del Marty Erhlich’s Dark Woods Ensemble all’inizio degli anni ’90. Uno dei violoncellisti di spicco della nuova generazione, può essere additato con diritto come primo vero violoncellista della musica jazz, gli altri erano bassisti che si permettevano licenze su questo strumento. Dotato di un grande talento improvvisativo, lasciando al suo strumento la propria vena romantica. Ha ampliato il ruolo del violoncello nel jazz, sia come solista che nell’accompagnamento.

Ha suonato in diverse orchestre ed in diversi paesi, ma dove ha lavorato con più soddisfazioni è stato in Francia con Serge Gkyckson. Ha svolto con piacere il lavoro di accompagnatore di famosi divi del teatro leggero. Si è impegnato anche negli studi e nel cinema. Ha registrato con Adelaide Hall nel 1936, con Bill Coleman nel 1937, con Arthur Bridge, Alix Combelle, con Django Reinhardt nel 1940 ed anche a suo nome.

Ha lavorato e registrato negli Stati Uniti, in Sud America ed in Europa. Ha collaborato in gruppi di avanguardia del rock e si è dedicato a musiche innovative.

Cantante che ha lavorato per diversi anni a cavallo degli anni ’30 con l’orchestra di Larry Clinton e ha contribuito con la sua voce ben educata e melodiosa al successo dell’orchestra. Nel 1937 ha registrato con Artie Shaw come Beatrice Wayne. Cantante che specie nei brani lenti riusciva a far sognare l’ascoltatore. Molto apprezzata per saper instaurare una specie di colloquio con il pubblico e per l’abilità di esporre le frasi con sensualità. Nel 1973 si è trasferita a Palm Beach in Florida dove per nove anni è stata l’attrazione principale del WPBR Show, prima di trasferirsi a Beverly Hills.

Ha suonato in gruppi di rhythm-and-blues ed ha accompagnato cantanti come Menphis Slim, John Lee Hooker, Parcy Mayfield e Sam Cooke. All’inizio degli anni ’60 ha accompagnato cantanti associati all’etichetta Motown e a Detroit ha suonato con Cecil McBee, Kirk Lightsey e Bennie Maupin. Ha fatto un tour in Brasile con la Paul Winter Consort e nel 1965 si stabilisce a New York dove ha fatto parte di gruppi di free jazz, ha suonato con Sonny Rollins, poi con Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Kenny Dorham, ha fatto parte della Jazzmobile di Harlem. Incoraggiato a suonare la batteria dal padre, il celebre Frederick (Freddie) Waits, ha studiato e si laurea con lode in Arts in Music presso la Long Island University. Ha studiato privatamente con il percussionista Michael Carvin e con Max Roach. I suoi modelli ovviamente il padre e Max Roach, che lo ha voluto nel suo ensemble di percussioni il M’Boom. La prima scrittura di rilievo è stata offerta a Waits dal sassofonista Antonio Hart, nel cui quintetto ha a lungo militato effettuando tours e partecipando all’incisione di tre albums. Oltre a prendere parte a vari gruppi di Andrew Hill, uno dei quali ha vinto il prestigioso premio danese JAZZPAR nel 2003, Nasheet ha collaborato stabilmente da diversi anni con il trio di Fred Hersch, nonché con il gruppo “Bandwagon” di Jason Moran e con il trio di John Patitucci, comprendente il chitarrista Adam Rogers. Tra le sue altre collaborazioni spiccano inoltre quelle con Geri Allen, Mario Bauza, Hamiett Bluiett, Abraham Burton, Ron Carter, Marc Cary, Steve Coleman, Stanley Cowell, Orrin Evans, Stefon Harris, Bill Lee, Jackie McLean, The Mingus Big Band, The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Greg Osby, Joshua Redman, Vanessa Rubin, Antoine Roney, Wallace Roney, Jacky Terrasson, Bunky Green e Mark Turner. Nasheet Waits è uno dei batteristi più interessanti e creativi della sua generazione. In possesso di mezzi tecnici e sfumature timbriche come di rado è dato incontrare, egli ha messo a punto uno stile molto stimolante e moderno, caratterizzato dalla mescolanza di flussi poliritmici che sembrano dare vita a delle vere e proprie onde sonore, che riescono a sottolineare e arricchire la musica dei gruppi cui partecipa in maniera efficace e originale.
WAITS TOM, THOMAS ALAN (VC)

La sua famiglia si è trasferita a San Diego quando lui ha 12 anni ed egli ha frequentato le scuole ed è tornato nell’area di Los Angeles ha fare il cantautore di jazz dal 1972 con il suo gruppo il “Nocturnal Emission”. Dalla voce rauca con qualche inflessione di R&B, dal lirismo sarcastico, il suo canto pur rivolgendosi al pubblico del rock è pervaso di sentimento jazzistico. Compone canzoni suggestive e melodiche, legate ad un opprimente slang dell’America dei bassifondi, delle prostitute, dei vagabondi e di amori squallidi. Fonde insieme una sua versione personale della esperienza espressiva afroamericana, con una ricerca sonora e verbale da poeta hip tra surrealismo e iperrealismo. Nel 1983 si è trasferito a New York per diventare attore, poi ha lavorato a Santa Rosa, ha fatto dei tour in Europa con un suo sestetto nel 1985 e nel 1988 ha registrato con il suo gruppo un concerto. In seguito si è dedicato al cinema, ha scritto per il cinema e per il teatro e facendo occasionalmente anche l’attore.

Ha suonato nella “Nat Youth Jazz Orchestra” di Bill Ashton, con Graham Collier, Tony Faulkner, Harry Beckett, Johnny Dankworth, nella “London Jazz Composers Orchestra” diretta da Barry Guy. Ha collaborato inoltre con la “John Williams’Four Pieces For Jazz Solist & Orchestra”, nel 1976 con Mike Westbrook e con gli “Impulse” di Brian Miller. Ha anche diretto un suo trio. Nel 1971 ha partecipato al Festival di Montreux, con Graham Collier ha fatto una lunga tournèe europea e con Harry Beckett una in Germania.
