TAKASE AKI (P)
Osaka, Giappone. 26/1/1948.
Ha preso le prime lezioni di piano a tre anni dalla madre insegnante di pianoforte, adolescente ha suonato il basso nell’orchestra della scuola ed ha frequentato la Toho Gakuen University di Tokyo. Si è avvicinata al jazz ascoltando i dischi di Mingus, di Coleman e di Coltrane. Ha avuto il primo ingaggio nel 1971 con il sassofonista Yoshio Otomo, poi con Hidefumi Toki e con Joe Henderson. Nel 1973 ha organizzato un suo gruppo e nel 1978 ha registrato il suo primo album come leader in un gruppo nel quale è presente Dave Liebman e, così, è stata invitata a partecipare al Festival di Berlino con un suo trio. Nel maggio 1982 ha suonato a New York con Cecil McBee, Bob Moses e Sheila Jordan ed in Giugno ha tenuto un concerto da sola. Nel 1983 ha messo su un quartetto con il quale ha girato l’Europa, dove in seguito si è stabilita prendendo dimora a Berlino e qui ha sposato il musicista Alexander von Schlippenbach. Ha diviso il suo impegno tra l’Europa e gli Stati Uniti. Pianista dalla ottima tecnica, brillante e molto versatile, cosa che gli permette di spaziare dal mainstream all’avanguardia ed anche di cimentarsi in aree fuori dal convenzionale. Nella sua musica è riuscita a conservare anche elementi della tradizione musicale giapponese, specie quando suona il Chinese Koto, strumento a 17 corde dalla forma di una cetra.

Ha studiato da solo la chitarra mentre frequentava le scuole superiori e ha debuttato professionalmente nel 1951. Nel 1954 ha suonato con Toshiko Akiyoshi, poi con Sadao Watanabe e con Hampton Hawes. Ha guidato un suo quartetto il New Direction. Dal 1959 al 1965 ha ricoperto il ruolo di direttore in varie attività sperimentali al Shinseiki Ongaku Kenkyusyo, un laboratorio musicale per musicisti d’avanguardia. Nel 1961 ha fondato un quartetto cooperativo il Jazz Accademy insieme a Masahiko Togashi, Masubumi Kikuchi ed altri. Alla fine della carriera nel 1989 ha fondato un gruppo di tango e spesso si è esibito in gruppi di jazz tradizionale e ha guidato gruppi di free jazz come il Jazz Contemporary and Tee & Company. Nel 1980 ha partecipato al Jazz Festival Internazionale di Moers e in Giappone ha collaborato con Sonny Sharrock, Derek Bailey, James Blood Ulmer e Fred Frith. E’ stato uno dei musicisti giapponesi di avanguardia. Spesso si è esibito da solo in improvvisazioni molto libere.

Gruppo vocale nato nella metà degli anni ’90, composto dal leader Mark Kibble, Alvin Chea, David Thomas, Cedric Dent, Claude V. McKnight III, Joel Kibble e Mervyn Warren che è anche l’arrangiatore. Provenienti dal Oakwood College una scuola protestante dell’Alabama. Il gruppo lavora senza supporto ritmico o strumentale, che è ben sostituito dal basso profondo di Alvin Chealoro, oltre naturalmente dal loro dinamismo, dalla complessità delle armonie e dal loro perfetto intreccio con le parti solistiche. Essi hanno riadattato modernamente un genere popolare della tradizione neroamericana il Jubilee ed il Jive di prima della guerra. Si rifanno un pò ai Four Freshmen e agli Hi’Lo’s e guardano con interesse le creazioni di Bob McFerrin.

Ha debuttato nel 1929 nella “Olympia Band” di Arnold Du Pas, nel 1931 suona con Kid Rena, nel 1935 con Paul Barnes, con Johnny St.Cyr. Negli anni ’40 lo troviamo con George Lewis, con il quale resta per molti anni e prende parte a molte sue incisioni, nelle quali si è dimostrato anche abile vocalist. Ha inciso anche con Albert Jiles.
TALBERT TOMMY THOMAS ROBERT (P-COMP).
Crystal Bay, Minnesota. 4/8/1924. – U.S.A. 2005.
Ha imparato a suonare il pianoforte da solo ed ha iniziato ad interessarsi dell’arrangiamento a 15 anni scrivendo per la radio. Dopo il servizio militare nella seconda guerra mondiale si è trasferito sulla West Coast dove dal 1946 al 1949 ha lavorato con Anita O’Day, nel 1950 con Claude Thornhill, poi con Tony Pastor, Kai Winding, Oscar Pettiford, Don Elliott e molti altri. Nella metà degli anni ’60 ha diretto un’orchestra di dodici elementi e dal 1975 si è stabilito nel sud della California dove ha lavorato molto negli studi come arrangiatore, oltre che dirigere un proprio sestetto.

Figlia di un canadese che non ha mai conosciuto e di una canadese nera. Ha iniziato a studiare canto e recitazione a 10 anni ed ha iniziato a lavorare nei teatri locali e nel coro gospel della parrocchia. Diplomata in fisiologia animale, si è interessata a ricerche sonore e creazioni radiofoniche. Nel 1972 ha fatto parte del gruppo ”Unit” di Michel Portal, poi di quello di Francois Achard. Si è esibita in duo con il percussionista Pierre Charpy e nel 1980 con Pierre Favre, nel contempo ha continuato a dirigere laboratori di ricerca vocale. Voce che le permette sia le tonalità basse che gli acuti delle soprano.

Ha svolto le mansioni di editore musicale alla radio Estone. Nel 1972 esce il suo primo disco nel quale il jazz mainstream si mescola al free ed al rock.
TAMPA RED, HUDSON WHITTAKER (G-VC).

Da ragazzo è vissuto a Tampa in Florida, da dove ha preso il suo soprannome. Da ragazzo ha frequentato l’ambiente del blues e nel 1918 si è stabilito a Chicago. Dopo aver peregrinato in diversi Stati del Sud è tornato a Chicago dove si è unito a George Tom Dorsey, con il quale ha iniziato ad incidere. Nel 1928 ha registrato “Tight Like That” che ha ottenuto un grande successo. Legato da contratto con la TOBA, insieme a Dorsey si è esibito nelle capitali del blues, guadagnandosi il titolo di “Guitar Wizard” (Mago della chitarra). Negli studi di incisione ha accompagnato in modo magistrale, Ma Rainey, Menphis Minnie, Cow Cow Davemport, Lucille Bogan, Lil’ Johnson, Mar Johnson. Mentre Dorsey si dedica alla musica sacra, egli continua a girare per le strade di Chicago e nei suoi locali, accompagnandosi con Black Bob, Big Maceo, Blind John Davis, Carl Martin. All’inizio degli anni’40 ha trovato in Big Maceo un altro partner ideale, diventando la grande attrazione nei celebri blues club della città. In seguito ha trovato collaborazione in Sunnyland Slim ed in Little Jonnnie Jones. Anche se il successo non gli manca, lo coglie un periodo di depressione in seguito alla morte della sua compagna e si è dato all’alcool che lo ha annientato e. salvo un tentativo fatto nel 1961 da Sam Charters di riportarlo a galla, è scomparso dalle scene. Senz’altro uno dei protagonisti del blues urbano del nostro secolo.

Nel 1930 arriva con la famiglia a New York, studia musica e nel 1939 mette su un’orchestra che ottiene un ingaggio al “Lido” di Amsterdam in Olanda. Resta in Europa dove lavora anche durante la guerra. Suona con musicisti americani che incrocia nel vecchio continente, Rex Stewart, Bobby Jaspar, Kenny Clarke. Buon arrangiatore, scrive per Jacques Helian, Benny Bennett, Bill Coleman. Suona con Hubert Fol, fa una tournée europea con Dizzy Gillespie, con il quale incide.

Da ragazzo ha suonato il pianoforte, la tromba e la batteria in gruppi rock nell’area di San Francisco. A Boston si è laureato in sociologia alla Università di Harvard nel 1974. Ha studiato percussioni al New England Conservatory nel 1979 ed ha suonato con Paul Winter Consort nel 1977, con Helen Humes dal 1977 al 1978, con Jaki Byard, Sonny Stitt, Hubert Laws, Sonny Rollins, nel 1979 con Milt Jackson e alla fine del 1986 con Art Farmer. Nel 1979 è andato a New York dove ha collaborato con Johnny Hartman, con i fratelli Heath dal 1979 al 1982, con Stanley Cowell, con Sylvia Sims, con Zoot Sims dal 1980 al 1985, con Al Cohn, con Jimmy Rowles, con Slide Hampton, con Cedar Walton, con Jim Hall dal 1985 al 1986, nel Jazztet di Farmer e Golson, dal 1986 al 1987 con George Coleman, con la cantante Lena Horn edal 1988 al 1989 con Paquito D’Rivera. Nel 1990 insieme a Rufus Reid ha messo su un quintetto, ha collaborato con James Moody, Jay Jay Johnson, con Ray Bryant nel 1991, nell’Asian American Jazz Trio, con i Manhattan Transfer, con Sonny Fortune dal 1995 al 1996 ed il cantante di rhythm-and-blues Ruth Brown sino al 1999. Nel 1997 ha diretto l’Akira Tana and the Japanese All Stars al Kennedy Center di Washington. Ha suonato ed inciso anche con Anita Gravine nel 1982, Alvin Burroughs, John Thomas, con Jack Purvis nel 1985. Batterista molto versatile, dall’hard bop delicato ma anche molto dinamico e possente. Ha insegnato al Queens College nel 1989, al Jersey City State College nel 1994, al Rutgers nel 1995.

Orchestra cecoslovacca attiva all’inizio degli anni ’20. La sua formazione era composta da tre sassofoni, pianoforte e batteria. Diretta dal pianista Elvin Schulhoff, che è stato anche validissimo come pianista classico. L’orchestra ha alternato un repertorio prettamente da ballo con quello jazzistico.

Ha studiato composizione con George Russell e ha fatto parte della Russell’s New York big band, con la quale ha registrato nel 1978. Dal 1980 al 1981 ha fatto parte del gruppo “Bhakti” e ha guidato un suo trio composto dal bassista Christian Stock e dai batteristi Rudy Roth o Heim Weidferhofer, con il quale ha accompagnato in tournée Karlheinz Miklin, Ray Pizzi, Wolkgang Lackerschmidt, Sheila Jordan e Monty Waters. E’ morto di AIDS.

Dal 1980 ha lavorato freelance con il Radiojazzgruppen, con l’orchestra di Ernie Wilkins, con la NDR Big Band ad Amburgo e la NDR Symphony Orchestra di Hannover. Ha suonato anche con Finn Savery, con Arne Domnerus e Rune Gustafsson, il trio di Duke Jordan e per diverso tempo nel quartetto di Svend Asmussen. Ha registrato con Frank Foster, John McNeil e Bernt Rosengren, con Red Holloway, Horace Parlan, Doug Raney, con Paul Bley nel 1985, con Chet Baker, Ronald Hanna, Red Roney, con Ben Besiakov e Bob Rockwell nel 1990. Ha avuto modo di accompagnare musicisti di passaggio come Stan Getz, Joe Bonner, Johnny Griffin, John Lewis, Lee Konitz, Toots Thielemans e Putte Wickman. Ha insegnato al Det RYtmiske Musikkonservatorium di Copenhagen.

Cresciuta a Monaco in Germania, dove ha studiato il pianoforte dall’età di sette anni. Dal 1974 ha frequentato il Berklee College of Music sino al 1976 e dal 1977 ha iniziato a suonare con gruppi di jazz europei ed ha continuato a studiare ai campus di Monaco organizzati dalla Università del Maryland. Nel 1980 è tornata negli Stati Uniti e qui ha suonato con Melba Liston nel 1982, ha lavorato alla televisione PBS nella serie “Women in Jazz: a Matter of Taste e ha suonato alla Carnegie Hall accompagnando Dizzy Gillespie nel 1981. Ha registrato e fatto dei tour internazionali con Erica Lindsey, con Bill Harper ed ha collaborato inoltre con Cecil Payne, con David ”Fathead” Newman, Clifford Jordan, Nick Brignola e Charles Davis. Nel 1990 ha diretto un suo trio con il quale ha suonato a New York ed ha partecipato a molti festival americani. Ha ripreso anche a studiare al SUNY nel 1993 ed al Queens College di New York nel 1995 ed ha fatto parte del Jazz and Contemporary Music Program della New School of Social Research sia alla Mannes New School nel 1996 che alla New School University nel 1999. Il suo modello pianistico è McCoy Tyner.

Cresciuto a Wilmington nel Delaware, ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a sei anni ed il trombone a 13. Nell’estate del 1938 ha avuto il primo lavoro in un club di Atlantic City, dove è stato ascoltato da Glenn Miller che lo ha voluto nella sua orchestra. E’ rimasto con Miller sino al 1942 e poi ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Charlie Spivak. Dopo il servizio militare, fatto dal 1943 al 1945, è tornato alla musica nell’orchestra di Les Brown ed in seguito è ritornato nell’orchestra Miller guidata da Tex Beneke dal 1946 al 1951. Nel 1951 si è stabilito a Los Angeles, qui ha frequentato la California University e fino al 1968 ha lavorato alla ABC. Ha anche lavorato con Neal Hefti, Henry Mancini, BIlly May, Nelson Ridde, Pete Rugolo e molti altri. Dal 1958 al 1981 ha insegnato alla UCLA e nel 1984 ha donato la sua notevole collezione di dischi a 78°al Music Library Special Collections.

Trio nato nel 1992 sul modello del trio di John Abercrombie, Johnson e Erskine. La musica prodotta è realizzata con molta cura e professionalità, soprattutto grande precisione e tecnica, legato al jazz contemporaneo ma ancorato strettamente alle radici soprattutto ritmiche del jazz.
