MARSH WARNE MARION (ST)
Los Angeles, California. 26/10/1927. – Hollywood, California. 17/12/1987.
La passione per la musica gli è stata trasmessa dalla madre, ex musicista, che però ha provveduto affinché al figlio fosse impartita una ottima istruzione musicale. Da ragazzo ha iniziato a studiare la fisarmonica ed il pianoforte ed infine il sax tenore, al quale si è dedicato con molta passione ed impegno. Durante gli studi ha suonato alla Hollywood Canteen insieme al trombettista Chuck Falkner. In seguito nel 1944 ha suonato nei gruppi diretti da Hoagy Carmichael in uno show radiofonico. Dopo il servizio militare è rimasto a New York dove ha studiato seriamente con Lennie Tristano. A Los Angeles ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Buddy Rich. Tornato a New York ha ripreso gli studi con Lennie Tristano, restando uno dei suoi discepoli più assidui e nel 1955 ha suonato con Tristano insieme a Lee Konitz. Tornato nella sua città per insegnare, ha messo su un gruppo, collaborando con Clare Fisher, con i Supersax nel 1972 e con Konitz ha fatto una lunga tournée Europea. Ha registrato da coleader con Lew Tabakin, poi con Peter Christlieb. Si è trasferito a Ridgefiled nel Connecticut dove ha insegnato. Ha messo su un gruppo insieme a Lou Levy, ha suonato con Kay Winding, Bill Evans, Ted Brown, Chet Baker, Joe Albany. Ha registrato anche con la Metronome All Stars, Art Pepper, Jimmy Giuffre, Gary Foster, Sal Mosca, Red Mitchell, Susan Chen. Musicista dal sound elegante, sciolto, essenziale e sempre attuale, dalle risorse melodiche inesauribili. E’ stato uno dei maggiori improvvisatori avendo seguito alla lettera la lezione di Tristano. In vita non ha ottenuto i riconoscimenti che meritava. E’ morto suonando “Out of nowhere”.

Pianista e compositore di ragtime, Marshall insieme a Scott Hayden si è trasferito a Sedalia nel Missouri sin da piccolo e qui oltre a studiare hanno iniziato insieme a comporre ed a suonare ragtime. Ha composto anche in collaborazione con Scott Joplin ”Swipesy Cake Walk” e “The Lily Queen” nei primi del ‘900. Nel 1917 si è ritirato dal mondo della musica, riapparendo solo in tarda età a qualche revival del ragtime.

Ha suonato nella sua città nell’orchestra da ballo del padre ed in gruppi studenteschi. Nel 1958 è entrato nel gruppo di Charlie Mariano, ha suona poi con Toshiko Akijoshi nel 1960. Durante il servizio militare ha suonato il pianoforte e nel 1965 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Stan Getz. Ha suonato con Sam Rivers, insieme al pianista Nike Nock ha accompagnato la pop singer Dionne Warwick e nel 1967 sempre con Nock ha fatto parte della “Fourth Way”una orchestra fusion a San Francisco. Ha accompagnato Dexter Gordon, George Benson, Toots Thielemans, Charles lloyd e nel 1977 Art Pepper. Nel 1974 ha inciso e ha fatto una tournée con Bobby Hutcherson per la Capitol. Ha collaborato con Eddie Harris, con John Klemmer, con Kenny Burrell, con Jon Hendricks, con Larry Vuckovich nel 1981, con Bruce Forman nel 1984, ha accompagnato Les McCann e Mark Levine, ha inciso con Archie Shepp, nel 1966 è andato in tournée con Bob McFerrin, con John Purcell. Ha insegnato alla San Francisco’s School of The Arts.

Ha iniziato la carriera nelle territorial band, con Milt Larkin nel 1939, con Eddie Fields nel 1942. Per breve tempo ha suonato con Coleman Hawkins, per andare a sostituire Jimmy Crawford nell’orchestra di Jimmy Lunceford nel febbraio del 1943. Dopo la morte di Lunceford è rimasto nella stessa orchestra guidata da Ernie Wilcox e poi da Joe Thomas. Nel 1945 ha sostituito Shadow Wilson nell’orchestra di Count Basie. Nel 1950 ha suonato con Earl Bostic, con Johnny Hodges, Al Sears, Ruth Brown, Budd Johnson, Sy Oliver, LaVerne Baker, Mercer Ellington. Ha spesso accompagnato dei cantanti di musica popolari e dei gruppi vocali. Nel 1960 ha suonato con Criss Barber, nel 1972 con Slam Stewart, con Lawrence Lucie. Ha preso parte al film “L’aventure du jazz”del 1970 con il gruppo di Eddie Barefield e Dick Vance.
MARSHALL JACK, WILTON. (G-LEAD)
El Dorado, Kansas. 23/11/1921. – Huntington Beach, California. 2/9/1973.
All’età di dieci anni ha suonato l’ukelele ed a tredici ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra. Nel 1938 insieme alla famiglia si è trasferito in California, dove ha lavorato saltuariamente nel trio di Nat King Cole ed in quello di Art Tatum. Nel 1940 è stato ingaggiato negli studi della MGM, nello stesso tempo ha frequenta gli studi di ingegneria ed il jazz per lui è diventato solo un diletto. Si è laureato in ingegneria, ma l’attrazione per la musica e per la chitarra in particolare è troppo forte, quindi si è dedicato completamente alla musica. Ha studiato composizione ed armonia oltre a studi classici di chitarra. Nel 1967 su sua iniziativa è nato un Festival dedicato tutto alla chitarra. E’ stato anche direttore della Capitol e ha lavorato moltissimo per la televisione ed il cinema. Alla sua morte hanno creato una fondazione a suo nome per giovani chitarristi.

Nonno i Eddie Marshall, si è trasferito a Boston dove ha studiato con uno dei migliori maestri George L.Stone. Ha debuttato giovanissimo con il cantante Jules Bledsoe e ha suonato con Charlie Dixon, prima di trasferirsi a New York dove nel 1922 ha suona con l’orchestra di Ralph “Shrimp” Jones, che nel 1923 è diventata l’orchestra di Fletcher Henderson. Con lui ha raggiunta la fama di miglior batterista della sua epoca. Il 1929 ha lasciato Henderson, ha suonato con i McKinney Cotton Pickers, con Duke Ellington, con Cab Calloway, con Sidney Bechet e Tommy Ladnier, con Bobby Martin. Durante gli anni ’30 ha diretto suoi gruppi, ha suonato con Chu Berry, Bob Shoffner, Ellsworth Reynolds, Dick Vance, Charlie Green, Lester Boone, Louis Jordan, Wellman Braud. Nel 1938 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Chick Webb, poi con Edgar Hayes, con Wild Bill Davison, Art Hodes, Garvin Bushell, Bunk Johnson, Mezz Mezzrow, Fats Waller, Bud Johnson e Sidney Bechet. Batterista che per primo ha liberato la batteria dall’essere solo uno strumento di accompagnamento, dandogli maggiore libertà.

Iniziato al contrabbasso da suo cugino Jimmy Blanton, ha sostituito quest’ultimo alla sua prematura scomparsa nel 1948 nell’orchestra di Duke Ellington e vi è rimasto sino al 1955. Aveva debuttato con Lionel Hampton nel 1942. Ha suonato poi con James Moody nel 1950. Ha iniziato dopo il 1955 l’attività freelance, ha inciso e ha collaborato con:la Just Jazz All Stars, con Gerry Mulligan, Louie Bellson, Stan Getz, Harry Carney, Eddie Bert, Tots Thielemans, Ray Bryant, Hank Jones, Nat Adderley, Jay Jay Johnson, Don Elliott, Betty Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Kenny Clarke, Johnny Guarneri, John LaPorta, Milt Jackson, Donald Byrd, Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, Billy Ver Plank, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Johnny Hodges, Charlie Barnet, Tiny Grimes, Julian Adderley, Jimmy Giuffre, Mercer Ellington, Eddie Costa, Ray Charles, Pee Wee Russell, Lem Winchester, Kenny Burrell, Jack McDuff, Roland Kirk, Gene Ammons, Red Garland, Duke Jordan, Dakota Stanton, i Newport All Stars, Illinois Jacquet, ed altri. In origine pianista, ma dopo un seminario con Jack McDuff nel 1994, ha scelto come suo strumento l’organo. Musicista che guarda alla grande tradizione blues e chiaramente ai grandi maestri di questo strumento, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith e Big John Patton. Ne viene un sound sanguigno. Figlio di un celebre violinista concertista, ha iniziato a studiare il violino ed ha iniziato a suonare con il padre nell’orchestra della radio. Nel 1933 cambia il violino con il sassofono tenore e ha messo su una sua orchestra a Milano e dal 1938 ha svolto una intensa attività nelle orchestra a bordo di transatlantici. Nel 1940 a Torino ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Pippo Barsizza ed in seguito mette su a Milano un’altra sua orchestra che senz’altro è stata la migliore della epoca. Negli anni che sono seguiti si è dedicato sempre più alla musica leggera.
MARTERIE RALPH, RAFFAELE MARTERIE. (TP-LEAD)
Acerra, Napoli, Italia. 24/12/1914. – New York. 10/10/1978.
Emigrato con il genitori in America a Chicago, all’inizio degli anni ’20. Ha iniziato a suonare la tromba a 14 anni. Il massimo del successo lo ha raggiunto nel 1954. Una sua registrazione del 1953 “Crazy Man Crazy”è considerato il primo brano registrato di rock-and-roll.

Ha iniziato la carriera nel 1925 al Club Alabam di New York con Sam Wooding, con il quale ha girato gli USA e l’Europa fino al 1931. Dal 1932 al 1936 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Willie Lewis e alla fine del 1936 ha messo su una sua orchestra a New York con la quale è venuto anche in Europa dove ha lavorato dal 1937 al 1939, ha registrato in Olanda e lavorato nei club di Rotterdam. Nel 1939 ha guidato un altro gruppo a New York e nel New Jersey, dove si è stabilito definitivamente. E’ stato il marito della cantante Thelma Minor. Ha cessato l’attività nel 1944.

Ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra e poi il basso tuba e nel 1910 ha fatto parte della “Papa Jack Laine’s Reliance Brass Band”. Dal 1916 al 1919 ha suonato con Tom Early, poi con Frank Christian a Milneburg in Louisiana. Nel 1923 ha suonato con la New Orleans Rhythm Kings a Chicago, a New Orleans con Johnny Bayersdorffer, a Chicago con Gerge Brunis. Ha registrato con Abbie Brunies, nel 1928 ha suonato con Johnny Miller, con Sidney Arodin. Negli anni ’30 ha lavorato alla stazione radio di New Orleans la WSMB e negli anni ’40 con Johnny Wiggs, in seguito dal 1949 al 1952 con Sharkey Bonano, con Santo Pecora e i Crawford-Ferguson Night Owls. Dal 1963 al 1964 ha risieduto a Disneyland e poi ha lavorato alla Preservation Hall di New Orleans.

Ha frequentato la scuola di arte drammatica ed ha esordito come cantante a 17 anni. In seguito ha studiato a New York ed ha lavorato a Las Vegas e a Los Angeles. Nel 1991 è tornata a Londra dove ha messo su un suo gruppo, nel quale ha avuto ospiti Clark Terry e Jim Mullen e con il quale ha girato mezzo mondo. Ha lavorato con la BBC Radio Big Band, con Mick Hutton, Bobby Wellins, John Stevens e Martin Taylor. Ha registrato nel 1996. Cantante dallo stile fresco nel quale mescola elementi del cabaret con il jazz.

Matita che ha firmato dagli anni’40 un gran numero di copertine di dischi, interpretando la musica afroamericana con sensibilità ed humor. Quando scopre il jazz era già un artista affermato ed è stata Mary Lou Williams che gli chiese di illustrare un suo disco, prodotto da Moses Asch, che lo ingaggiò nelle sue case editoriali. Con Ash lavorava Norman Granz che a sua volta diventerà produttore di fama e assumerà Martin come direttore artistico. Per opera di un indiano che vive in Giappone Manek Daver, è stato pubblicato il “Jazz Graphic-David Stone Martin”nel 1991, che è un documento meraviglioso, artisticamente e storicamente, dell’opera di Martin.

Attore di cinema e cantante essenzialmente pop, sulla scia di Bing Crosby. Ha lavorato negli anni ’50 con l’orchestra diretta da Dick Stabile, poi anche con Nelson Riddle. Cantante dal morbido swing crosbyiano, con quella vena di umorismo che non guasta.

Rimasto orfano in tenera età ha trascorso l’infanzia negli orfanotrofi l’adolescenza presso dei parenti. Ha iniziato a suonare la batteria e poi il sax. Pensava di fare il giornalista ma i primi soldi guadagnati come musicista lo hanno convinto ha intraprendere questa attività. Ha diretto la sua prima orchestrina a scuola ed ha inciso i suoi primi dischi con la Columbia. La sua abilità ha attirato l’attenzione del direttore d’orchestra affermato come Guy Lombardo, che lo ha voluto nella sua orchestra e con il quale è rimasto legato da profonda amicizia. Ha iniziato a lavorare con una sua orchestra nel 1931 presso l’Hotel Bossert di Brooklyn. In seguito ha diretto orchestre in Hotel prestigiosi ed è stato soprannominato “Mr.Silverstone” da Johnny Hodges. Per parere dei critici ha diretto la più piacevole delle orchestre da ballo. La sua sensibilità musicale gli ha fatto ingaggiare sempre degli ottimi musicisti per le sue orchestre.

Verso i sedici anni Joe Martin viene affascinato dallo stile di due celebri bassisti, Jaco Pastorius e Stanley Clarke, trovando poi una voce personale attraverso l’ascolto di Ray Brown, Scott LaFaro, Paul Chambers, Ron Carter e Charlie Haden. Si diploma nel ’94 e parte alla volta di New York, dove incontra il batterista Jorge Rossy, con il quale inizia un tour europeo al seguito del tenorista Mark Turner. Incide pure per il sassofonista Perico Sambeat il cd “Ademuz”, in cui, oltre a Rossy e Turner, figura anche un giovane pianista di nome Brad Mehldau. Nel 2000 realizza “Algorhythm”, primo album a suo nome nel quale, oltre a farsi apprezzare quale compositore di temi originali e cimentarsi perfino in una rivisitazione di Bach, si distingue per essere l’unico esecutore dell’intero lavoro, dando egregia prova della propria padronanza tecnico-esecutiva alla chitarra acustica, al piano, alla batteria e, ovviamente, al basso. Voce profonda e chiarezza d’eloquio, Joe Martin ha collaborato tra gli altri con Art Farmer, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bill Charlap, Jon Gordon, Vinicius Cantuaria. Tra i suoi lavori più recenti si segnala l’album “Passage”, con Kevin Hays al piano, Jorge Rossy alla batteria e Mark Turner al sax.

Ha raggiunto il massimo della popolarità negli anni ’70 nel gruppo di Joe Locke. In precedenza ha lavorato con Dizzy Gillespie, Pepper Adams, Jimmy McGriff e Tony Bennett, con i quali ha anche registrato.

Nel 1975 è tornato alla chitarra, ma lavora anche come segretaria per poter vivere. In seguito ha interpretato composizioni di Ornette Coleman, Steve Swallow e Wayne Shrter. Ha ricevuto le prime lezioni di pianoforte dalla madre all’età di cinque anni. A scuola a 14 anni ha iniziato a studiare il clarinetto al Sacramento State College e nel 1963 allo State College di San Francisco. All’inizio degli anni ’70 ha iniziato a fare delle tournée con cantanti pop ed ha lavorato negli studi. Ha fatto parte dell’ ”Atzeca”, gruppo di latin-rock ed ha suonato con Tom Harrell, Art Lande, Steve Swallow, Ron McCLure e Eliot Zigmund. Nel 1975 ha fondato il “Listen” un gruppo fusion, nel 1983 ha fondato il “Bebop And Beyiond”e nel 1991 ha partecipato a San Francisco alla prima dell’opera postuma di Charles Mingus “Epitaph”. Nel 1991 ha fatto un tour in Giappone con Benny Carter, nel 1994 a New York con Kenny Barron, poi con Freddie Hubbard, con la Charlie Haden’s Liberation orchestra e con altri musicisti di passaggio nell’area di San Francisco. Ha insegnato privatamente e alla Sonoma State University ed ha scritto degli articoli su il “Saxophone Journal” e “Jazz Player”.

Ha suonato con il quintetto di Todd Williams. Si è diplomato nel 1987 e sino al 1989 ha frequentato la Julliard School of Music, la Florida State University e l’Università di New Orleans dove ha avuto come maestro Ellis Marsalis. E’ andato in tour con Betty Carter nel 1991 e a New Orleans con Nicholas Payton, Christopher Thomas e Brian Blade nel “New Orleans Collective”. Ha suonato con Marlon Jordan, con Mark Whitfield, con Wynton Marsalis ed ha guidato un suo trio. Ha partecipato alle jam session al “Charlie B’s”e nel 1992 ha fatto un tour con il “Jazz Future II”, ha suonato con Roy Hargrove, con Joshua Redman, nel 1996 con Dianne Reeves, con il “4 Sight”insieme a Ran Blake, Rodney Whitaker e Gregory Hutchinson e nel 1999 ha formato il gruppo “Quest”. Ha registrato con Victor Goines, con Johnny Griffin, con Jeremy Davemport, la “New Orleans C.A.C.Orchestra”, con Donald Edwards. Ha composto musica per il cinema e la televisione.

Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte da bambino e ha completato gli studi all’Università di Syracuse e di Miami. Ha iniziato a lavorare come accompagnatore di cantanti di musica leggera. Nella metà degli anni’50 è diventato il pianista e l’arrangiatore di Billy Butterfield, Boyd Raeburn, Ray McKinley e Don Redman. Ha effettuato delle ottime incisioni con Louie Bellson e con Sal Salvador. Pianista del linguaggio molto scarno, essenziale.
MARTIN ROBERTA (P-VC)
Melena, Arkansas. 12/2/1907. – Chicago, Illinois. 18/1/1969.
Gospel singers elegante e delicatamente chicagoana. Nel 1917 si è trasferita con la famiglia a Chicago, dove ha studiato pianoforte ed il suo sogno è diventare pianista concertista, ma il suo sogno è cambiato dopo aver cantato nel coro della Ebenezer Baptiste Church. E’ entrata nella corale di Thomas A. Dorsey. Pianista, compositrice e anche arrangiatrice originale. Nel 1935 ha messo su i “Martin Singers”, che è diventato ben presto uno dei gruppi storici del gospel. Cantante dalla voce emotivamente coinvolgente, molto fluida e sottile.

Gospel singers di origine georgiana. La più stretta collaboratrice ed anche ottima interprete dei gospel di Dorsey con il quale ha lavorato sin dalla costituzione della prima corale del l932 la “Ebenezer Baptist Church” a Chicago. Cantante di grande carisma e comunicativa. Lasciato Dorsey ha formato il primo gruppo vocale femminile religioso della storia del Gospel, le “Sallie Martin Singers”, della quale ha fatto parte anche una giovane Dinah Washington. Cantante che ha rappresentato il passaggio dal canto religioso country e quello più professionale e impegnato del gospel maturo, tra la ruralità sudista alla sofisticazione vaudeville. Dalla voce grezza e ruggente, granulosa, irresistibile dalla erre arrotondata che le dà un qualchè di sofisticato.

Cantante di blues che ha avuto il suo momento di gloria negli anni ’20, come una delle maggiori interpreti del city blues, cioè del blues portato nelle grandi metropoli del nord al seguito della emigrazione dei negri del sud verso le aree industriali del nord. Ha iniziato a cantare nei spettacoli di vaudeville nell’area di Chicago e nel 1922 in quella di New York. Di lei Clarence Williams che ha diretto sue diverse sezioni di registrazioni ha parlato di una voce robusta ed un modo particolare di interpretare il blues. E’ stata la prima delle voci blues ad essere registrata su disco. Ha lavorato nel 1922 sino al 1923 con Fats Waller , con W.C.Handy, a Louisville con l’orchestra di Earl McDonald e ha registrato a New York nel 1924, con Sidney Bechet, con King Oliver, con Louis Armstrong. Ha fatto una tournée a Porto Rico e a Cuba e ha fatto parte del “Kentucky Jubilee Singers”.

Musicista che ha operato per molti anni sempre in orchestre di primo piano. Ha suonato con quella di Count Basie, dal 1939 al 1940 con Charlie Barnet, nel 1941 con Benny Goodman, dalla fine del 1941 al 1942 con Glenn Miller e con tutte ha registrato, alternandosi al clarino ed ai sax. Ha fatto parte del sestetto di Cootie Williams. Ha anche fatto l’arrangiatore per Les Brown ed in questa veste ha lavorato negli anni ’50 per orchestre di musica popolare e commerciale.

Inizia la carriera a 16 anni nell’orchestra di Les e Larry Elgart. Ha suonato poi con Billy May, Slide Hampton, Jimmy Dorsey, Donald Byrd, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Kay Winding, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock. Nel 1961 ha suonato con Quincy Jones all’ora all’apice della carriera. In Europa ha suonato con Albert Mangelsdorf, i fratelli Joachin e Rolf Kuhn, Martial Solal, Johnny McLaughlin, Jean Luc Ponty. Ha messo su dei gruppi con Larry Coryell, con Steve Marcuse David Izenzon, con John Surman e Barre Phillips, con Charlie Mariano, con Gerard Marais e Claude Barthélémy con i quali ha inciso il solo disco da leader. Ha inciso anche con Curtis Fuller, Lambert/Hendricks/ Ross, con Sonny Rollins nel 1964, Attila Zoller, Lee Konitz, Peter Warren, Michel Portal, Stan Tracey, Sigfried Kessler, Carla Bley. Batterista dalla ottima tecnica che spazia dalla tradizione americana a quella dello Est Europeo a quella orientale.

Dopo aver suonato con vari gruppi locali nel 1952 si è stabilito a Parigi dove ha suonato con Michel Hausser, nel 1953 con Alix Combelle, nel 1958 con Claude Luter, con Marc Leferriere nel 1962. Nel 1963 è tornato con Hauser, nel 1979 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra dei Petits Francais. Ha inciso con Guy Lafitte, Andre Persiani, Barney Bigard e Bill Coleman.

Figlio di emigrati ebrei dalla Polonia, si è avvicinato alla musica a dieci anni e durante gli anni di scuola ha messo su un gruppo vocale gli “Red Peppers”. Ha iniziato a lavorare nell’orchestra di Woody Herman e nel 1930 si è recato a Hollywood dove è iniziata la sua scalata alla fama ed alla fortuna. Cantante esponente della florida comunità canora italoamericana, che ha fatto sognare una generazione di ragazze americane. Voce modellata sul crooning di Bing Crosby, con una punta di languore meridionale. Cantante dai mezzi vocali modesti, che però utilizza con intelligenza ed umorismo, dando a tutto ciò che canta una connotazione sorniona. E’ stato attivo in particolare dagli anni ’30 agli anni ’50 come intrattenitore nei nightclub alla moda, nel cinema. Nella sua carriera ha avuto 17 dischi d’oro e nel 1955 una nomination all’Emmy Haward. Dal 1948 al 2008 è stato sposato con la famosa attrice e ballerina Cyd Charisse, in precedenza è stato sposato con un’altra attrice famosa Alice Faye.

Percussionista cubano messosi in luce negli anni del bop con Dizzy Gillespie. Ha suonato anche con Charlie Parker, con Benny Goodman, con Count Basie. Per diversi anni dal 1949 al 1961 ha fatto parte dei gruppi di Art Blakey, con i quali ha partecipato a diverse incisioni e concerti. Ha fatto parte anche del gruppo di Horace Silver e di quello di Tony Bennett sino al 1963. Dal 1968 ha lavorato nel Nord Europa, soprattutto a Stoccolma. Nel 1972 ha fatto parte della Peter Herbolzheimer’s Rhythm Combination & Brass. Nel 1973 ha messo su un suo gruppo sempre in Svezia il New Burnt Sugar. Ha inciso anche con l’orchestra Clarke/Boland.

Ha collaborato piuttosto stabilmente nel gruppo “Trane’s Memory” diretti da Ponissi, ha diretto il quartetto “Jazzinaria”, oltre che un proprio trio. Ha inciso con Drew Gress, con Paolo Franciscone. Ha collaborato con Gianni Basso, Flavio Boltro, Emanuele Cisi, Maria Pia De Vito, Anne Ducros, Fabrizio Bosso ed altri. Ha prodotto un jazz semplice, pianista sensibile, dal fraseggio elegante, armonicamente di buon livello e pieno di un prezioso senso ritmico. Pianista del quale si spera nel futuro.

Ha debuttato nel jazz nel 1941 e nel 1944 ha fatto parte del gruppo 013 di Piero Piccioni. Ha messo su in seguito i suoi ”7 della 013”. La sua attività è fare del jazz per far ballare, è diventato presto l’attrazione dei migliori night italiani ed esteri. Ha iniziato anche a cantare ispirandosi a Nat King Cole. In Danimarca ha avuto modo di suonare con Stan Getz, con Lars Gullin e con Svend Asmussen. In seguito è diventato una attrazione sempre più commerciale. Tra le tante sue composizioni vi è “Estate”, definita la Stardust degli italiani, motivo che è stato suonato ed interpretato da tutti i musicisti del mondo. Motivo che è stato ripreso negli anni ’70 da Joao Gilberto e registrato con gli arrangiamenti di Claus Ogerman. Il suo rapporto con il jazz è stato evidenziato nel “Zazzarazazz”, il festival della canzone jazzata, nella sua duplice veste, da un lato il suo esordio come pianista swing ed interprete confidenziale e la sua vena compositiva che ha sempre risentito degli influssi statunitensi a livello di gusto e concezione armonico-melodiche, dall’altro da molti anni la rivalutazione del compositore di canzoni, divenute degli standards contemporanei.
